BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

Also sounds totally safe over a city.
IIRC they won't commence firefighting until the target area has been evacuated, they don't use water (think it's the same stuff as wet chemical extinguishers) so wouldn't really want anyone in the target area, though considering the target area will usually be on fire you would think people would want to be in it lol.

it will be interesting to see if the French taxpayer or public subscriptions [ or both ] will fund the rebuild.

the good people of the rural heartland will doubtless get a bit bolshy if they find they have to pay for a damaged landmark 400 miles away
when local public services are being squeezed due to lack of money from central govt.

It'll turn out to be something cretinous that caused it like an over loaded power cable, or a dodgy transformer, a heater thats been left on, or even an industrial vacuum cleaner left switched on, which is what caused the fire that trashed the Cutty Sark, all it takes is a moments forgetfulness and your screwed.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most culturally important buildings in Europe, I imagine the rules and regulations surrounding working practices during restoration are a little bit more strict than the average building site.

People don't always follow rules and regulations though, especially if there is time / money to be saved.

i'm guessing by the fire that's currently burning that may not be as accurate as it should be!

i live thousands of miles away and i would wholeheartedly donate for the restoration of such a awesome creation.

In theory, in practice you still get mistakes or faults that might be caught most of the time but if you're unlucky and it happens when no one is looking you get a fire.

Something as simple as woodshavings falling onto a light fixture could potentially start a fire, let alone any cables that's had damage occur since it was laid (I doubt every inch of temporary cabling is inspected daily).

Am guessing old wiring once disturbed has crumbled and caused a spark near something flammable.

Or Esmeralda left her dodgy hair tongs plugged in.

I guess, though could just as well be careless workmen as someone suggested earlier. I guess particularly if using roofing equipment etc..

LOL @ Esmeralda though :D

And one firefighter has been "seriously injured" :(

That's sad, I get that is is a really significant building that everyone would like to see saved as much as possible but I also don't think firefighters ought to feel the need to take many risks here (if any) so long as there are no people inside, I mean I'd rather they were just stood well back and potentially letting more damage occur rather than putting any lives at risk, as significant as it is it is still just a building.

As someone currently training as an electrician, some of the electrics in the older buildings I have been in are just shocking (no pun intended) its a wonder they lasted as long as they have.

Old victorian house I was renting long back, had been converted into flats. The power in the basement burnt out and we lost power. Went down there and whole power box has basically melted...

Called northern powergrid people they came over and were like.... this **** is probably like 100 years old. Had to get his boss to come down and fix it as he had no idea what to do.

Made me realise crapp.... our entire block of flats could have burnt down....

Surely the Catholic church had insured it?

If not, then can't they use some of that nazi gold they have squirrelled away.....

Seems a bit strong for the taxpayer to have to fork out for a cathedral belonging to the Catholic church.

Terrible news. Reminds me of the Windsor Castle fire in '92 where the threat level was raised to "amber bikini" for a while but it turned out the cause was a work light being left too close to a curtain. :(
