Breakthroughs in Last 20 years?

Think I may do the Google. However, whatever the class choose can not be rooted to before the 25 year period. Can't have internet as that was before, but a search engine is something that came much after and can argue it's distintivness.
 
For me the biggest breakthrough of the last 10-20 years has been in our understanding of genetics. The mapping of the human genome stands out in particular.
 
As mentioned your definition of "unique" doesn't really give much scope here, innovation is generally not a Eureka! type occurrence out of thin air but rather a constant stream building on previous innovation.

Perhaps to get things started the OP could list what they consider to be unique breakthroughs from the past 100 years (or as far back as he feels it necessary to go to identify one), as this should help to clarify what you are looking for.
 
This is pretty breakthrough I think.

Whatever that material is that holds this mount in place, is space age. It's not just a suction cup.. You can literally hang off it, even when its on dry wall. It'll revolutionise the way we hang things on walls, cars. So many different applications. Handiest car mount in the world too !
