As mentioned your definition of "unique" doesn't really give much scope here, innovation is generally not a Eureka! type occurrence out of thin air but rather a constant stream building on previous innovation.
 
Perhaps to get things started the OP could list what they consider to be unique breakthroughs from the past 100 years (or as far back as he feels it necessary to go to identify one), as this should help to clarify what you are looking for.
