If anyone is familiar with Brewdog you'll know that this isn't the first time they've done something controversial they've just released the "UK's Strongest Beer"

A Scottish brewery has been branded "irresponsible" after launching what it said was the UK's strongest beer.

With an 18.2% alcohol content, a 330ml bottle of Tokyo*, made by BrewDog, contained six units of alcohol - twice the recommended daily limit.

Thing is when you look at BrewDog's own website it's listed at 14%, personally I think people are getting their knickers in a twist over nothing, as this beer is clearly marketed at those who "appreciate" their beer and would gladly pay £10 for a bottle of beer. Im sure the brewery is loving the publicity though

I think your average Scottish alcoholic would rather pay £6 for a litre of 40% generic vodka than £10 for a 330ml bottle of 14% beer.

Thoughts? Do you agree with the branding of brew dog as being "irresponsible"?

The thing I don't get is that they say it'll improve the situation with binge drinking in the UK. I can't see how selling the nation's most alcoholic beer is considered helpful, but that's just me.

I don't necessarily see how it will help, I don't see how it will harm either considering the price tag.

It's not the sort of beer anyone's going to be drinking a lot of (I'd expect it tastes fairly disgusting at that kind of strength), and at that price you could get yourself a bottle of spirits if you were simply looking to get yourself as drunk as possible.
Looks like a usual media overreaction to me.

That's going to taste rank!

Anyway, I don't see it contributing to the UK's binge drinking problem when you can buy a litre of cheap vodka in Tescos for cheaper.

OK so if you look at this rationally:

1 pint of average beer is 2 units, and costs probably about £3
A 330ml (about 1/2 pint) bottle of Tokyo* is 6 units and costs about £10

So you could buy 6 times the amount of beer (by volume) than you can Tokyo*

Hence for the same £10 you can have 6 units worth of beer or 6 units worth of Tokyo*

...

Tabloid extremism.

Cheap beer is irresponsible, not expensive beer.

I doubt very much it'll be disgusting, BrewDog really do know what they're doing. I haven't had the Tokyo, but the 12.1% Montepellier is delicious (tastes more like wine than beer), and the 10% Paradox Smokehead is a truly amazing beer.

I'm not sure why the media are getting kicked for this, it's organisations such as Alcohol Focus Scotland that are causing the fuss. And stupidly, frankly, it's £6/bottle* and contains much less alcohol than a bottle of wine. BrewDog beer, in general, is not something you're going to drink just to get smashed, it's on the pricy side and you want to appreciate it.

* - It's £10 for an individual bottle, but if you buy six, they're just under £6 each (not including p&p).

At last Christmas I had some Scaldis Noël which is a 12.5% ABV beer by a French brewery called Dubuisson, and it is far from disgusting, it has a smooth, toffee, xmas flavour to it. Just because a beer has a high alcohol percentage doesn't mean it'll taste bad, especially if it's a from a brewery with a good reputation.

I've had Belgian beers at 15% before - tasted like liquid Bovril though.

I don't see what the fuss is about at all TBH. You can get far more Special Brew than that with £10, and get in an a far more awful mess with it.

The irony of existentialism, the parody of being and the inherent contradictions of post-modernism, all so delicately conveyed by the blocky, pixelated arcade action have all been painstakingly recreated in this bottles contents.

o.o

As said above most spirits can be had cheaper then this per litre and they are usually a lot stronger.

I don't see what all the fuss is about
