Afternoon chaps,

My friend and I are looking into buying a kit each come pay day next monday and brew them until Boxing day when we will compare our creations.

Has anyone become a master at this with certain kits, any advice?

Not really sure what to ask other than where to get kits, any extras that I might need to purchase and as above, any advice?

Thanks

Depends on the kit, you should just need the following.

Fermantation container
Tin of malty gloop.
Yeast.
Sugar.
Big spoon.
None return valve.
One of those alcohol thermometer type things.
Stick on thermometre for side of fermentation barrel.
Syphon.
Pressure barrel.

My advice is to take note of the recommended room temperatures, water temperatures and times. Leave in the fermentation container longer if you're unsure.

When I used kits, I liked Muntons the most but added hops and spraymalt.

You'll need:
A fermentation vessel (FV) - 5 gallon at least (pretty much every kit is designed for 5 gallon/40 pints).
A hydrometer (to measure the gravity so you can work out the ABV).
Enough bottles to bottle it in.
A syphon, to fill up the bottles.
Airlock, to stop air getting into the brew but allow the CO2 to get out.

Most brewshops will sell a whole started kit that includes everything you need. I use a local brewshop, I imagine Reading will have one though there are numerous websites that you can use.

I've been looking at these recently, I drink one or two bottles of Ale a week and would much rather brew something of my own than pay a premium for a decent bottle.

There's a big homebrew thread over in La Cuisine that's worth taking a look at.

I've ordered most of my stuff from Brewuk. Wilkinson also stock a few beer kits (Woodfords and some others) along with stuff like Campben tablets, sterilisers and other kit.

Technically, lager is a type of brewing rather than an end product but only really pernickity people care about that.

Agnes, do you have some thing to brew it in and something to conidition (bottles) it in?

Nope, not a thing. Hence why I am thinking about a noob bre kit :)

Will buy bottles when it's ready :)

Lots of kits supply bottles / a keg to store your beer. If you are intent on doing a lager you'll certainly want bottles, as you can fridge em.

I've done a few lagers, but TBH I've found ales tend to come out much better, which is a shame.

I would recommend this kit Linkage. Just add a small bottle of steriliser too and it's literally got everything you need to make a drinkable Lager.

Right, what you linked will do you but it probably won't be a very good brew. Though it's not a bad price for the equipment.

You could buy that for the equipment, and then buy a nicer kit. Muntons or Coopers are both pretty good and reliable.

Anyone tried mr beer kits? iwoot has them, i also have a 20% voucher

Stay away if you want a decent beer.

Simply put.

If you are interested in brewing decent stuff you need the proper equipment (which you can find listed in threads in this section. Or feel free to make a new thread, we'll be most pleased to help :) )
