Children's TV was very limited in these years so presenters such as Brian, Tony Hart, John Noakes, etc played a big part in early childhood development in one way or another, up to the dawn of multi channel broadcasting..

I know everyone's supposed to think they grew up in a 'golden age' for one thing or another, but I do think this generation of children's TV stood head and shoulders above the huge range of diluted scheduling available in more recent time.

I grew up with Cant & co., and thanks to being the first of four children spread across more than a decade, his voice and the mellow Murray/Postgate era tales were part of the backdrop to my life for longer than most. At least most who'll admit to it anyway! :-) His voice in particular could be very soothing and reassuring, especially if your childhood wasn't all smooth sailing. And even today, while engaged in a tedious task, I will be quietly humming "Time flies by when I'm <insert tedious task>" and heading towards a notional Chigley in my head, where life is a little less stressful.

I like to think of it as meditation. Others might think it something less rational!
