Wondering if the west should start to worry about membership growth of the BRICS ? Some are vast countries with vast supplies of energy. Could it be that the main reason for the shift away from oil by some countries, as to not be dependent or held to ransom by the BRICS. Would it erode the wests power and wealth, are we witnessing a shift in power?

BRICS it has great potential for a power realignment, but two of the founding nations are very wobbly. Brazil is a basket case, and South Africa is virtually a failed state.

Their economies are pretty small, too. South Africa ($419 billion) has a GDP smaller than that of New South Wales ($500 billion) while Brazil's ($1.6 trillion) and Russia's ($1.77 trillion) are just slightly larger than New York's ($1.56 trillion).

India and China are the real drivers of BRICS, and they will ultimately be the greatest beneficiaries. Everyone else is just along for the ride.

Isn't BRICS the first letters of the main countries involved?

The potential problem this will do is moving away from the petro-dollar. Some of those countries are allowing other countries to buy oil in their own currency.

The US could have big economic issues if the dollar no longer is the reserve currency, as they take big gambles with the dollar as it's very protected at the moment.

There was the trend about 15 years ago to create the country groups named by acronyms!

Oh. I thought you were going glittery like that other thread.

E. On the trade reserve currency front - I'd bet a fiver the USD will have a contender from the BRICS mob in 10 years or less.

I'm with the book Critical Mass, a 'multipolar' outcome is nigh on predicted. There is a way around it, however.

Just returning the norm of having a bunch of irrelevant states and a few empires exploiting those states to every more violent degrees until they realise they've been had (again...) only this time there's far more tools to control people so good luck to those folks I guess. The only beneficiaries are naturally the largest entities, such is life.

Are we still The West if countries like Brazil are invoved? They're far further west than most of The West are...!
I think the line for those calling the west is situated around the gulf stream.  :cry::cry:
