Hi,

My Dad is wanting to get into photography more, use more manual settings. Right now he has a Canon A80 which has lasted him a few years fine. But now he is wanting a bridge camera so he can have more of a play.

Well I thought a bridge would be the best idea. What do people think? And which ones are recommended? £180 is really his max budget.

Plus what do you think he could sell the A80 for?

Not sure if its what you're after, but I have a Kodak DX6490 for sale in MM which might be suitable :)

I've got a fuji s6500fd. Picked mine up for £175.

I recently took it to uganda for 3 weeks and when I get home I'll post a few snaps I took (at work atm).

Highly recommended by me and comes with all the standard ISO, aperture and exposure controls as well as a few others too so it's got all the manual stuff sorted.

Fuji S6500fd without a shadow of a doubt. It has a full automatic mode, full manual mode and anything inbetween! Plenty of pre-sets for scenes, such as landscapes, portraits, flowers, the beach, party, museum (it silences the camera and suppresses the flash) etc etc. It even has a scene mode for snow!

Battery life is good (as long as you can get hold of an XD card reader or USB stick adaptor thingy) and the zoom is manual which gives a great degree of control (and as it's manual it doesn't drain the battery).

I don't profess to be a decent photographer but if you check my flickr link in my sig it'll give you an idea of the quality this cracking camera can produce.

fuji refurbs are doing 9500 and 9600 for around that money (+- 15 quid) maybe worth looking into too?
Im a little biased owning a 9500 myself.

Can't disagree with these Fuji recommendations. I spent the best part of a year deciding on which bridge to get and Fuji were very near the top of my shortlist but I went Canon in the end, though I'd have been even happier had I paid OcUK's This Week Only price for it. :)

I have a S5600 and think its fab! Would recommend the S5700 which is the newer replacement model with bigger screen and MP.

You can get the S5700 for a little over £100, I personally think that if you are going to spend £200 or near to it, maybe worth looking at getting a DSLR ie Nikon D40 for £330 with £60 cashback from Nikon, giving you a DSLR for £270?

Examples can be fuond on my flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/martinturner

thing is a dslr doesn't have the flexibility out of the box like a bridge camera. once you get into the world of dslr's you then start looking at a telephoto lens, a macro lens etc etc. the list is (almost) endless.

get the 6500. can't go wrong with that.

I have a Panasonic FZ8 which can be had around £180 now.

Its brilliant camera and i would recmond it too.

Here are a few from the british grand prix i took with it.

Fuji S6500 or Panasonic FZ8 would be my choices, get your dad to go into a shop and try some out, see what he prefers.
