So all other things being equal, and ignoring all the extra features (ie longer zoom) is the picture quality on a bridge camera better than on a compact??

Presumably the photo quality of a DSLR is better than a bridge, but is a bridge better than a compact???

Cheers in advance

Not necessarily, a bridge camera typically uses a small sensor (smaller than a compact) to achieve the longer zoom range. Generally speaking, the smaller the sensor the worse the image quality; high ISO performance being a particular weakness. However, practically speaking there isn't much difference between compacts/bridges.

The biggest difference in image quality can be seen between DSLRs and compacts/bridges. Bearing in mind sensor size is not the only factor in determining image quality.

The fuji bridge cameras like the s6500 use there larger format sensor which achieves much better high iso performance than some competitors. It's not drastically bigger but it is the reason that the f31fd compact was such a legend. In general they will have better qulaity than a compact as the glass is normally better.

I'm a proud owner of a F31fd

From what I've seen, bridge cameras are easily better that compacts. There's no substitute to lots of good glass
