Hi Guys,

I need help from some Bristol natives if you'd be so kind. I've just arrived at Avonmouth docks, where I'm on board the car carrier Tortugas (if you can see the docks from where you are, it's the white and orange ship with Wallenius Wilhelmsen in huge white letters running along the side), and I've been set a task by our 2nd Engineer. He's desperate to get some Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and has asked me as one of only two Englishmen on board where he can get some when we go ashore. The only problem being, I'm as new to Bristol as he is.

I know branches of Tesco stock them, but I don't think there's one near Cribb's Causeway, where me and a bunch of the crew are headed. Does the 24 hour ASDA at Patchway sell them perhaps?

Cheers.

Two in Bristol:

What about the alcohol!?

What about it? We can buy it on board, duty free in $US deducted from our pay. For instance, 24 x 330ml bottles of Bitburger are $12.00, and it's pretty good. We'll pick up stores at various ports, so at the minute, beerwise we currently have on board:

Hite - South Korean Beer; awful but only $9 we picked up in Busan, Korea
Becks - 24 x 330ml bottles for $14
Bitburger
Toohey's - Australian beer we picked up in Fremantle last time the ship was down there $22.00

There's spirits too, but I don't drink those so I'm not so sure of the prices.

Beast of a ship. What do you do and where does it take you if you don't mind me asking?

At the moment, we're delivering cars we picked up in Nagoya, Japan from Toyota/Lexus. We'll drop the last of the 5,700 cars we picked up in Japan in Zeebrugge, before heading to Bremerhaven empty to load with BMW's and Audi's, and then Southampton for Jaguars and Landrovers which we'll deliver in stages in South Africa and Australia. After dry docking in Subic Bay, we'll repeat the process. Load in Japan or Korea, head to Europe and start discharging. A full lap takes about 3 & 1/2 months or so.

UK Flagged Vessel Evades Pirate Attack

From Commander, Combined Maritime Forces Public Affairs
MANAMA, Bahrain – A UK flagged merchant vessel, the MV Tortugas has successfully evaded a pirate attack by following industry recommended ‘best management practices’.
The vessel was attacked on March 15 by two pirate skiffs, 135nm North West of Madagascar. Rocket-propelled grenades and small arms were fired by the pirates and the bridge window and ventilation system on the MV Tortugas were damaged. The vessel maintained a high speed whilst taking defensive maneuvers and after an hour and a half the pirates withdrew their attack. There were no reports of injuries.
Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) recommends that, at a minimum, all vessels transiting the area register with the Maritime Shipping Centre – Horn of Africa (MSC-HOA) for updates on the Group Transit scheme, and also contact the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) for the latest updates prior to entering areas of higher piracy risk.
The MV Tortugas had followed recommended guide lines, including reporting to UKMTO and was better informed and more prepared to deter a pirate attack. It is important that all mariners be familiar with and employ all ‘best management practices’ available and applicable to their vessel.
Successful transit of the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin rests in the hands of those who sail the waters. An average of more than 20 ships from the EUNAVFOR, NATO and Combined Maritime Forces, and other independent nations work together every day to patrol the high risk areas and provide the maximum safety available for those sailing through these pirate-laden waters. However, it is incumbent upon owners and shipping companies to provide the best available protection for their ships by utilizing the shipping industry’s ‘best management practices’ as a proven means to minimizing the risk of a successful piracy attack.

Her stats are something too, she carries over 6000 cars

Enjoy yourself and be careful. ;):)
