just had a quote for a combi boiler from british gas.

ive got a boiler with a immersion heater and want a combi boiler as the bill's are quite high due to the old boiler being 13 years old and not very good.

the lovely man from british gas wanted £4000 !!!

i said i would pay cash and get rid of the old tank and tank's in the loft.

he then said "that will still be £4000"

overall labour is for 2 days and will cost about £3000 !

what a total rip off.

Aye they are.

Get a few quotes is my advice you could go and pick up a boiler yourself and then get someone to install it which may make it cheaper.

after the shock yesterday i am looking at getting a better boiler than british wanted me to have.

http://www.cheapboilers.com/gas/combi/glowworm/flexicom-30-cx.htm?ref=base

that is the boiler in which they said i was going to get.

i asked for a vaillant but he said they dont sell them....lol

i showed the british gas web site and showed him the vaillant i wanted and he didnt really say much after that.

i do think he was trying his luck with me.

Don't fit a new boiler in the hope of saving money, you will never make back the cost before the new boiler needs replacing as condensing combi's have a very short life expectancy. Only replace your boiler if the old one is unreliable or unsafe.

the old one is very old and not cost effective any more.

my bill's are huge for the time the boiler is on.

a new combi boiler will cost me more but i will save money each month.

and we will have hot water all the time.

I had a quote of £3,500 from British gas for a new boiler and pipework to be installed.....I called another local plumber who said he used to work for British Gas and would knock a third off their quote before I had even told him the price!

He did a good job with a 'worcester' boiler (who are apparently amongst the best?) for just shy of £2,000 so they must be making a mint

GO anywhere else but British Gas - we have Home Cover with them and they are still trying to fix a fault that is clocking up to be ongoing for a year next week.

If they can't troubleshoot what hope have they at installing a new one and connecting the right pipes up ;)

Of course, they are probably okay but after a year of sucking through teeth and hearing 'We've definately fixed it this time' for the past year I am a bit biased :)

Lots of bias in this thread.

-British Gas ARE expensive, there's no denying it (£78/hour labour!) but what happens if you have a problem? You ring the number and someone comes to sort it. Good luck with Mr. Cowboy plumber if the same thing happens. Also, for the record, "paying cash" is not an incentive for a large company.. it only helps people who are into tax fraud.

-That boiler in the OP is actually completely fine, have very few problems with them.

-The salesman in question clearly wasn't very good at his job.

-malef!c, do you think another plumber would have had more luck and continued to come back over and over again without charging you extra? Some faults aren't just as simple as replacing a single part and it certainly doesn't help with some crap boiler manufacturers where the new parts just fail again and again.

I work at a plumbing merchant and from experience Gloworm boilers are among the worst for reliability and apparently don't have the level efficiency of a Worcester or Vaillant. We supply British Gas as well as local plumbers and if I were you I would pick a few corgi (gassafe) registered heating engineers and get some quotes in.

Good luck.

im with you maxpower.

i have seen on forums that glowworm boiler's are pretty rubbish.

i have made some phone calls today and just for the install i can get the price down to £1100 and i will supply the boiler and any part's.

got a friend of a friend who can get boiler's cheap.

going to go for a vaillant boiler after load's of forums highly recommend them.
