I think the reason he was spared was because he was NOT a security contractor like the others. There was probably some payoff by the British government too.

While it's good he was released, let us hope it was because his captors found a speck of light in their hearts and not because of a payout - this would cause precedents and encourage such people to continue the kidnappings.

A similar situation with the pirates off the coast of Somalia. Everyone keeps paying them off, so they keep doing it.
