British Monarchy - Views...

The Monarchy costs each person in the uk what 67 pence a year to run? Thats value for money if you ask me.

It would be more accurate to say that the Civil List costs each person in the UK 67p a year to run. This is more than made up for in the money the treasury gets from the Crown Estates. Even discounting tourism the monarchy makes the country money rather than costs us.

However I would say that the 67p is more than worth it to keep the likes of Brown, Blair, Livingstone etc from being the head of state.

I'd say the 67p was entirely worth it for Prince Philip alone, forget the rest of the benefits and drawbacks. I can't think of any other form of entertainment I can get for less than £1 a year which has given me such enjoyment over the years.

I've got no strong feelings either way towards the rest of the Monarchy although I think we're better having them with their generally known foibles when compared to the alternatives of an elected head of state. For all that it's not meritocratic etc it's actually a system that works pretty well overall.

I don't think this made the press but it is quite true.

A former colleague of mine was injured on duty in a car crash and was at a recuperative centre which was visited by Prince Phillip.

She and another female officer in for the same thing were spoken to, to which HRH said that it didn't say much for women police driving.

:D

Personally I despise them, theyre an embarrassing anachronism. Id sooner seen the palace serve as a shelter for the homeless than filled by those *****.

Government popularity fluctuates, things happen that make them less popular as we are seeing today.

I think the monarchy seems to have that popularity and stability through such times.

The popularity of the monarchy has varried greatly. It was very unpopular come the end of Victoria's reign, for example.

Personally I think it's time to grow up and move on to a republic. Hereditary power is indefendable in the modern world.

Yeah 'cos republics fair better don't they... they're much more mature. Oh no. Wait.

Aside from tourism, charity and tradition.

It's good to have a person basically born and bred to be a apolitical diplomat especially in a lot of the world that where former colonies.
