That rather assumes that civilisation (such as it is or indeed another form) wouldn't have happened anyway. Also are you sure it is a point in Britain's favour that half the civilised world exists because of Britain? Here I defer to Mark Twain - "It was wonderful to find America, but it would have been more wonderful to miss it." although I'm not specifically aiming this at America, what passes for civilisation in a lot of the world is probably not worth the time or the effort to classify it thus.
