Been trying to get internet for the last month without much success.
Living in a house share which already has BT but was unable to access the wireless network, kept getting a limited connectivity error. Looked like the router was not assigning me an IP address.
So I decided to go with virgin and get cable, but alas my landlord says he doesnt want it.
Back to BT, so I have arranged for a line to my room.
Question is who do i go with?
The others have cancelled their plan and are going to go with me.
I dont have any networking equipment and that modem/ router they had was probably what was stopping me before.
Sky sounded good but you have to take the TV, landlord will probably say no to a satellite dish. It may still be a better deal then BT at 25 + 11 BT Line rental even if i only take the BB and leave out the TV.
I was thinking UKFSN plans were good but now I am a new customer, theres a £54 for new line as well as the fact I have to get my own equipment.
The plan will end up being 19.90 + 11 BT

Do I have any other alternatives and what would my best option be.
cheers
jon

Resolve the issue with the existing router or discuss cable situation with landlord ... find out if he will be ok with you having a new line installed in the property as he seems to have issue with anything that involves cabling so you may be asking for grief.

i have spent hours trying to sort the router out but to no avail. The phone line is already there, the BT engineer just has to come by and say its okay.
i think i might just go with SKY, pay for tv but not install it, just to get the internet.
Pity I still have to pay BT line rental else it would be a no brainer.
the alternative is the BT plan that costs the same anyway but not sure what their unlimited is.
only other option I can think of either involves more fees or buying new gear which I rather not.

Paying for TV but not having it installed will be a slight problem as if the install doesn't take place they won't activate the account. You can't aske the installer not to install it and activate it because in the event of a 'fault' he get's shafted so he won't. What sort of router is it? Can you not manually set your IP in the correct range or enable DHCP ? Even if you buy a new router it's got to be cheaper than forking out for sky every month and not viewing it!

bugger.. SKY is only 25 BB plus TV. There doesnt seem to be anything else cheaper on the market.
can you recommend a value for money modem/ router wireless to accomodate three pcs?

The BT Modem/ Router the house has I think BT Voyager 2091 or something along those lines.
There are two other ppl in the house using wireless to connect to it and it seems to work for them.
I initially borrowed the modem but the line in my room was not active. Using a wireless usb adaptor i cannot even access the router.
it detects the networks, i put in the network key.. it tries to connect, takes awhile, then i end up with limited connection.
if i do an ipconfig, theres no gateway.
i tried a static ip, it says im connected but i cant access the router.
reinstalled XP twice and applied
a Hotfix for SP2 wireless bug but that didnt do anything for me.
i have no idea how else to trouble shoot this.

ok so basically you have a working internet connection with a working router

but your PC just cant connect to this wireless router for some strange reason

and your planning on changing ISP to solve this ?

ok first things first. It would be much easier to buy a 2nd hand router off e-bay and explain to the landlord the old one broke, so you've bought another.

If you think you're landlord will kick off about this, you're best off trying to sort out the problems with the existing router.

what key are you entering to access the router. Is it a hexadecimal one (ie only containing numbers and letters a-e) or is it a WPA key with letters further up the alphabet ?

when you say it out loud it seems a little silly.. :)
landlord isnt involved in the internet, he just doesnt want cable installed which he feels would involve ugly cables running up to my room on the first floor.
2 girls who currently running the internet are not pc ppl. They took over a previous flatmates BB, no idea what the plan is. They have since canceled the plan which was on a 3 month contract.
i suppose where i'm at right now is we need a new plan.
cable has been ruled out.
a new BT line will be active this friday.
no point trying to salvage the router it looks old.
all bundled in a plan we split three ways..
the key is 13 chars and i believe contains a z.
