Broadband question - do you pay line rental still?

As far as I can remember you used to have to pay BT for your line rental (phone line) and then a separate monthly fee to your broadband provider.

Is it still like this? If not, how does it work?

Also, any reccomendations for suppliers? My sister wants a basic phone line + any speed broadband with little useage, as cheap as possible ideally.

I suggested NTL but they owe her money after a long time of not paying so she hates them :D
 
As far as I know this is still the case with ADSL, you pay for the line rental and then for the ADSL broadband service on top. Unfortunately I'm on ntl cable and have been for a while so can't recommend any particular ADSL providers.
 
Yes you've still got to pay (at least) the £11 a month for BT Option 1. No, that isn't going to change soon.

As for an ISP, Nildram PAYG?
 
Yup. You're forced to take Bulldog ADSL though, and you need to be able to get Bulldog LLU in the first place.
