Had TalkTalk for a number of years now, currently only recieving a maximum of 2.4 mbps service which runs around 260 kb/s max download and between 80-90 kb/s upload, from a few people ive talked to my upload seems awfully high considering talktalk are sure that they cannot budge on maxing my downstream any faster, does anyone have any ideas or should i just switch company? we are in a bit of a rural area but are we apparently

You are approximately 6.28km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

Hi mate, thanks for responding. Stats below and we are connected to the Mildenhall Exchange

Type Interleave Path
Status SHOWTIME

Downstream Upstream

Data rate(Kbps)
2360Kb 805Kb

Noise Margin
9 8

Output power(dBm)
126 171

Attenuation(dB)
68 29

You're not getting too bad download speeds fromthose figures. Changing isp probably won't get you any increase in speed, you're too far away to increase it much. try the usual suspects putting router in test socket, making sure decent filters, extension/phone cables all wired well together...

Hey, ill give that a go but ive done that all before not much has changed, any idea how to work out what kind of internet service your running? I found a guy who mentioned he was on ipstream service 2meg and he had asked the moderators to change him onto ADSL max plan, my exchange supports this, any idea?

You have a little noise margin on the downstream left to play with. Talktalk won't lower your line profile down any further for stability issues (you are currently on a 9dB profile, moving to 6dB would more than like make your connection unstable due to Talktalk using cheap Huawei MSANs)

BE would be your best bet and will probably give a little speed bump too, downside is that it will cost a bit more than Talktalk but money well spent imo.

I'm almost as far away from the exchange as you are, I have a 54 dB line attenuation compared to your 68 dB and I get 4-5MB (varies) so compared to your 2.4MB that is quite good.

Have you removed the bell wire from your phone socket(s) to improve your line/sync? See here - http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/bellwirenutshell.html

Apart from doing that, all you can do is ensure your wiring is all good, healthy filters are in place, being in the master socket there isn't much else left!

You don't have access to cable by the looks of your exchange other, and I will presume TalkTalk already have you on their LLU system considering your exchange is enabled for a few LLU providers including TT.

We're with Talk Talk too and the upload speed ratio is pretty high. It's 2400/896 at this time.

Either way going from experience Talk Talk are pretty bad. For the last few months this connection has deteriorated to sometimes abysmal speeds. Right now the only thing that can be done is a bit of light browsing due to the speed. Ping to some game servers I play on is usally ~50ms but right not its been ~200ms for the last fews hours. It'll probably go back to normal by midnight.

It use to be pretty good. Late last year download speeds at good times sometimes reached 300kBs and the connection was quite solid. For the last 4 months its just got worse over time with slower speed and more dropouts. If it gets worse I will probably consider moving ISP.
