Broadband Upgrades?

Hi guys and girls,

I just want to have a conversation/discussion with you guys about broadband/internet issues. Basically where I live in the countryside basically, they have not updated the lines for years, I cannot get fiber optic of course, at the moment we are receiving 1mb down our line, which means downloading at the most of 100kb/s this is a real killer for the things I would like to do such as downloading movies and streaming game-play from time to time, is there any other sort of providers out there such as satellite as I have looked into it and I know we can get 10MB with them, but the price is quite extortionate, is there any other way of getting high speed broadband? If not moving onto the satellite broadband do any of you know the best provider for it? With a good price to go with as well?

Thanks for any replies I may get!

Satellite isn't an option if you need a lot of bandwidth. There might be a wireless project in your area. Check Samknows.

I cannot get any type of wireless, my line is saying 1meg max. What other options do I have, only ones I can think of to get good download and upload is satellite. Anyone know of any others?

You'll want landline or LTE to get decent response times anyway, and seeing as the UK isn't getting LTE in the foreseeable future I don't see a lot of options.

How attached are you to your house? :p

Oh, are you suggesting moving? This is not a option lol if you were thinking of it, I need some sort of broadband with around 10MB, I cannot stand 1MB anymore.

I am in the same boat, sort of, as the op,although i get a slightly higher 2.5-3 meg
Out in the sticks too.If you use it for just e-mails and surfing a 3g connection will be faster, probably.
I can get 4meg+ here on 3g,even as high as 7 meg with some providers but too costly for downloading or streaming for the whole house

Use this to see what providers have masts near you, ideally you'd probably want three as they supposedly have decent mobile internet: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/search

I'm in a similar boat although not quite as bad (got 3.5mbit adsl):

-No FTTP
-No FTTC
-No LLU
-No ADSL2+
-No 3G
-No Virgin Media

The good news from your perspective is that the government is allegedly committed to providing a minimum speed of 2mbit to pretty much everyone over the next couple of years, so if you can genuine only get 1mbit max then I'd suggest your area is likely to get some sort of upgrade.

Well my options are only, satellite broadband right now, but some people are saying this wont be good for gaming etc? I cannot think of anything else, even a Wireless ISP in my area?
