Well done OP for being honest and showing great integrity!
I wouldn't personally take a card apart as I'm not willing to take the risk in that I too would not return a card if it was clearly my fault. I would however try and get it repaired at my cost.
Someone else mentioned they returned a faulty mobo due to an "accident". THere are risks involved in fitting mobo's. I do personally see that as a little different - accidental damage is not the same as taking something apart. If I accidentally damaged a mobo while fitting it, again I would contact the company with the reason and would expect them to repair it or do a replacement at a reduced cost ( not full price) due to it being a risky item to fit. I expect the manufacturers expect some accidental damage to mobo's. Even being careful I've dropped one of the rear case plates on a mobo before luckily without any damage
