Broke something at work..

I can't believe some of the replies here along the lines of "Shouldn't have to pay" and "walk from the job".
The guy has admitted he was pratting about - of course he should be expected to make a contribution if asked.
 
Companies I am pretty certain can not charge you for accidental damage as they should be insured.

Unless it states in the contract you will be held responsible for any damage you may cause, you should be safe.

I have broken £8k worth of microwave equipment before so dont worry.

Indeed, and I'm not disputing my partaking in a contribution to the broken kit.

I am (merely out of interest) asking about the legalities in such an instance. Fini has pretty much summed this up. Thank you :).
