Hey sorry if this is a bit of weird thread im just looking for some confirmation what ive done here is ok.

Yo, done something really stupid earlier!
I broke the little L shaped bit of plastic on my ssd sata connector (im an idiot i know). And it also bent a few of the pins down.

Basically ive put the L shape in the sata cable and then straightened out the pins, connected them together and then taped the connection with ordinary tape, not electrical tape or anything :S.

Turned on the pc and its all working normally.

Im now in the process of copying off all important files, not that there were many any ways just in case it all messes up. But so far so good.

My question here is, is it okay to leave it like this? I mean it all seems to be working good at the moment. Also having tape around it kinda bothers me, but i assumed because ssds don't get very hot it wouldn't be a problem?

if its working then its fine, couldnt you glue it back in place? or maybe try for rma?

ssd's don't get hot anyway

Didn't have any glue in the house :P. I kinda wanted it to work quickly because its my boot drive. Might be a good idea to revisit it though if i get some glue. But at the same time, i don't want to tempt fate!

I suppose when i have time off from college, i can always try and rma. I wasn't sure whether they would actually accept it as it was all my fault in breaking it.

Thanks for the reassurance, so your saying if its working its probably all good? If so that's pretty good news for me!

The connectors on some of them seem to be made from chocolate. They really should have made a better SATA connector.

Count yourself lucky that it's working!

Yeah im as surprised as you are, when i saw the pins all bent down i thought it was over. But i guess when i roughly straightened them, the cable did the rest of the work.

Well thanks for your responses im a bit paranoid about what is safe when it comes to these things. Ill just leave it be and see how long it lasts :P.

I've done this a couple of times now (either I am terribly clumsy, or they are making the connectors out of chocolate) and not normally a huge issue.

On the back of a couple of Hard Drives, I have glued the broken bit of plastic back on with Superglue, hardest thing is normally getting the broken bit out of the Sata cable without damaging it further. They normally line back up easily and superglue seems fine at holding for at least a good few insertation/removal cycles.

If this happens to your motherboard however, then chances are you just have to write off that port, as they tend to be much harder to line up and glue straight, and the plastic seems to be slightly different. (Somehow broke one on a Dual 771 Xeon Board.... gutting)

Well at least its not just me then, i don't usually like to blame my tools or whatever for my mistakes. But it really does feel they are made out of chocolate aha!

Glueing does sound much better than my tape idea...
