Hi Guys,ive got a problem!
Ive got a second hard drive installed which is a MAXTOR 10 200GB.
Its been working fine, but today when i switched on my PC it booted up to the Windows logo with the blue bar loading up,then a blue screen flashed up with writing on, but before i could read what it said the PC reset itself and tried to start up again but it keeps on doing this same routine. So what i did is disconnect the MAXTOR hard drive and it booted up fine no problems.I presume the Maxtor hard drive is the problem. Is there anyway i can rectify this as i have important files on the drive that i need to access?

Thanks in advance.

have you tried safe mode? (hold down f8 when booting - if you get as far as the windows loading bar you missed your chance - reboot)

If that fails, try booting from the windows xp cd, try recovery console first and try chkdsk /f (or whatever the flag is to fix the disk)

If that fails (but you can get into safe mode) enable BSODs so you can read the message before it reboots

if that all fails, try repairing your windows xp install

I can post further details depending on what you know how to do, just I'll do it if you need it :)

Hi
Ive tried F8 holding it down but the PC goes to windows loading screen every time it wont go into safe mode with the drive connected

i could do with knowing what the message says its fills about a third of the screen but goes off to fast1

with the hdd connected, insert windows xp cd and then boot from it

you may have to go into the bios to change the boot order, set cd rom to boot first

then when it asks you to press a key, press a key :)

eventually it asks do you want to setup windows xp or load recovery console. Press r to load recovery console

this will take a few mins to load and will ask you for your admin password

when you get a command line enter "chkdsk /f" (without quotes)

let it work its magic then try rebooting back into windows

My only problem with your suggestion is i have no windows cd as it is preinstalled on my working hard drive.

Ignore that last post as i found my recovery disc.
I did as you said pressed r for recovery but i got the message that it could not detect any hard drives. This i dont understand, any ideas?
