Hi guys.

Looks like I have a broken ipad 1. We sent it back while in warranty because the screen would not come on. Apple returned it saying it was fine.... And it was.

Now the screen has gone off again :(

basically hit a button and a very faint change of colour appears... The unlock screen.
Will connect to pc.. Update etc fine just can't see screen.

If I turn it horizontal and hold power and volume down screen comes on with slide to power off.... Spin it round and it goes almost black again.

If I keep it vertical as such nothing comes on.

Any ideas what this problem is and can anybody fix it?
I checked apple and a new screen is £205!
Bit reluctant to pay that but got a £450 piece of glass :(

very annoying as this was the original fault only for apple to return it.

Thing is it only comes on with the pad in horizontal and then flickers like mad... Hmmm maybe worth opening I guess..... Fiddly? Special tools?

It's wife's ipad.... Not that she cares really... Hardly used it... Think I more bothered it could be useless.

Don't open it, easy to crack glass and all the metal clips will break meaning new frame or clips needed

ok investigated a little today.

Cant get in touch with apple as they want £25 for a single incident call......

Checked online a few companies say new screen etc £200+

or send it away and pay £25-50 diagnostic.......
crazy apple

you pay decent money for a new one.... (could be ) 12 months and 1 day later they require you to pay half the price again and only warranty it for 90 days ----- am I the only one that thinks this is a bit nuts ?

can anybody recommend anybody else that will repair it.... otherwise I may tackle opening it up...... thing is couple of days ago when it first did it it started working again.... so not sure what the problem is .... if it was screen surely it would not come on at all ?

Am thinking / hoping something is loose or maybe a power thing to the screen but not sure if I get in there anything noticable will stand out..... either way one expensive piece of glass....

and yep ... always take out apple care ;)

The guide makes it look easier than it is and you will be hard pushed to repair it without bending or snapping something (from experience!). Take it to an Apple store and explain what happened, take any proof along with you from sending it off before as well. Apple have some of the best customer service I have ever experienced and I think you have a good argument here.

Thanks guys. Yeah taking to an apple store is easier but to be honest there's not one too close. Don't even have an email as well from the original incident. Must have deleted it when they sent it back and it was working so not too sure what to do. To be honest it's thewifes and she don't seem too fussed. If it's going to cost £200 or so I think I'd rather pit that towards a new one....... With apple care ;)

Thanks for the links.
