Anyone had any luck getting their iPhone 5 charger replaced for free out of warranty?

I understand it is quite a common issue for the lightning cable to break at the phone end, which appears to have happened to mine!

Quite annoyed as it must only be a month or so out of warranty.

I've had mine replace twice one with warranty and one without. They check the serial number of the phone the cable is from, not sure what they'd do if you bought the cable standalone. As for the out of warranty the guy seemed a bit 'well I shouldn't really...' but still gave me it anyway.

I only use non-branded Apple cables now. Braided and built a lot better. I bought ten of them at £1.50, but I think they're around £3 each now.

These will be unlicensed cables though. Good for charging, no good for anything else.

Been having a long hard look at finding a shorter cable. 6 inch cables are too short, and mean that I can't use the thing while plugged in, while other ones are too bulky! Personally haven't had any problems with the Apple cables (don't pull them by the cable!) so to be honest, I think I'm just going to get one of Apple's own 50cm cables (cost the same as the competition).

The original third party USB cables wouldn't work with iPhone 5S/Air etc, but the later models do. Much prefer paying a couple of quid than £15 a cable personally - especially braided cables.
