Car was in for an interim service today and they are trying to fleece me for every penny (nail in tyre... tyre is low on tread... needs this that and the other). Anyways, they just called me up and said that they have broken something on it.... they have broken the "scuttle panel"?!?!

I think that is by the window wipers? why would they be there? I have only just had the linkage fixed by a mate (mechanic at VW dealership).

Apparently they are getting a new part for me and will fit it tomorrow.

Any idea how they have done this? why they would be working on that part of the car? What a scuttle panel is? and will it affect me until tomorrow if it rains?

 :(:o

On the Focus the pollen filter is located under the windscreen scuttle (And a complete cow to take off without breaking). If the Golf is the same, prhaps they replaced the filter and broke the scuttle in the process.

The scuttle panel is the plastic bit below the windscreen where your wipers sit. Depending on HOW broken it is this could range in seriousness from 'A cosmetic nuisance' to 'A real pain' becuase it CAN let water into the cabin depending on how its broken.

Well, if they are replacing it free of charge as they should be, then theres no real reason to be I guess. It's only a piece of plastic trim really and probably no big deal at all to replace. If you're that worried, just ask them how they managed to break it.

One thing to remember is that when they replace it, they seal it properly. Again, I know its a different car, but the Focus community reports numerous issues with water in the passenger footwell after the pollen filter has been changed, owing to the scuttle being removed and then not being sealed properly when replaced.

Ok, I will ask how they broke it.... the service better not cost me the earth or I will be peeved. Off down there now.

Expecting this minor interim service to cost me about £100 tops...

Numberplate bulb
Oil change/filter

Think that's all they have done? What else should I expect them to have done, I can't remember what I spent on my last service.

Why would ANYONE get a garage to do this for you :/

Do you call your builder/electrician every time you get a blown bulb in the house?

You laugh, but I didn't notice I had a blown numberplate light bulb, BMW pointed it out at my last service and changed it for the cost of the bulb (about 22p). My mum's Focus was in for a service at Ford a few months ago and they also spotted a blown numberplate light bulb - except they wanted to charge £20 to change it! Promptly told them where to go, obviously, and changed it myself.

You must think I am an idiot Paradigm, they did it for me. I didn't ask them to do it, in fact they fixed it last time I went in there which is strange.... but my car has electric issues! I do know how to change the numberplate bulbs though thanks...

They are my local garage where I bought the car (local to work) and to be honest I hate using them.

Sadly unless you have High OBC the E39 doesn't tell you about blown numberplate light bulbs. It just tells you about blown brake light/headlamp bulbs via the pictogram. High OBC cars alert you to any blown bulbs and annoy you every time you take the key out of the ignition (BONG BONG BONG) in to changing anything that's blown rather quickly ;)

That's outrageous given the cost of the car :(

I don't usually follow my car from the rear at night to notice, I don't have all these bmw sensors :D

Don't worry, neither does my Spanish Golf ;)

The scuttle panel on my mum's mk4 Golf was cracked when some thieves tried to steal the windscreen wiper motors of all things

they also cracked the windscreen at the same time so it must have taken some force. I dont think it was expensive to fix however, or even if it ever was repaired. was purely cosmetic.

Same on my Volvo, just cost me an extra £8 at MOT for 2 number plate bulbs, i never check as all other blown bulbs come up on the dash :(

Bulb cost me 29p, ouch.

Crack is about 8cm long and on the plastic below the window wiper. They are replacing tomorrow free of charge so I think that's ok... apparently they did it changing the pollen filter.

Interestingly enough, they told me my brake pads were at 20-30% wear left. I haven't touched them since and this time they said that they were at 40-50%!!!

Total cost - £97

Muppets.

Pretty sure the pollen filter is under the scuttle panel on the Golf, same as the Leon. Far right from the front of the vehicle, far left from inside.

But....are they changing the pollen filter? If not, why are they fiddling with the panel in the first place?
