Just today the silent switch has broken off my iPhone 3G. Have tried pushing it back in but it continually falls out so wondering if I will get any help from Apple.
I've had the phone since November 08 and didn't take out insurance.

I heard at some point that the warranty was modified to only last 12 months irrespective of how long your contract was, is this applied retrospectively? I'm sure I bought the phone before this was announced so wondering if anyone can clarify for me.

At best would Apple fix it as a goodwill gesture (as I've seen a few mentioned here before), or will they tell me to gtfo.:p

Thanks in advance.

If it's a known fault then they will replace it there and then, though if not you might not be able to get it replaced. It's always worth going to an Apple store and trying though.

Was in store today was was given a few options;

New handset at £130
Third party repair
Fix myself

While I could glue it it's very fiddly and seems likely to glue the whole thing together so guess I'll just live with it.

Having tried to do it minus the glue before I found even with applying pressure with a table I can't get it to sit in as deep as a normal one.:p

You can buy the little switches on ebay for a couple of quid, but not sure how easy it would be to replace it.

You could try pressing Apple under the terms of SOGA, but not sure how you will get on with that. If you can prove it was a manufacturing defect, then you're sorted :)

Try a different Apple store [if possible] or go in on a different day and see if you can get a different "genius".

I had my iPhone repaired recently under warranty. I took it to my local O2 shop and the first guy pretty much fobbed me off, though I did give him the benefit of doubt [more through me being in a rush than actually believing him! :p].

Went in a couple of days later, ready to kick off if they tried the same rubbish. I got a different guy and he was like "yeah no problem. I just need some details and we can send this off". I was in there for 5 minutes! :D

You can wrap a Genius round your little finger if you're the right person and you go in with the right attitude. Just remember that they're human beings and the repair won't cost them anything - but if you're out of warranty they don't have to help you if they don't want to.

All you need to do is make them want to do you a favour. Do this by being nice to them and also giving them a slight hint to them that if they're not good to you you might get a bit narked.

My experience of the genius team after a) working with them for close to 2 years and b) counting several of them as friends is that if you're nice to them they will bend over backwards to help you. If you're snotty to them you'll only succeed in making the one person that can help you into your enemy.

Obviously there's limits to this in both directions! There's only so much they can get away with and if you're 'entitled' to help/repair/replacement they have to give it to you even if you're a scumbag. But with all things, if you treat them with respect and are a nice relaxed person they WILL try and help you to the best of their abilities, they genuinely want to see you walk out of the store happy.

See I was very nice to the guy and had a good enough raport with him, (I had wondered what attitude he might have with the whole "genius" title etc) but it was fine, atmosphere was very friendly and all. The problem is I have no warranty, insurance, applecare etc so it literally is only a favour.

May try again or failing that phone up O2 and see if they will be nice.
They've been my provider for over six years, I have the iPhone and my broadband with them. Think loyalty will win me something?

I live in NI so Belfast is my only option I think.:p

only if faulty from day 1 it would get replaced, unless apple are nice

To be fair I had contemplated this, Googling around shows many people with this issue albeit they had it within days and not 17 months. :p

All the Geniuseseseseses I know are top boys, the title doesn't skew them. It could skew the wrong sort of person but the wrong sort of person doesn't tend to get the position. It's a stupid job title anyway, as is 'creative'. I was a creative, a bloody good one, and I consider myself about as creative as a jam sandwhich :D

As I said, they'll try, but if they don't feel they'll get away with it they won't risk their necks.

It's not thaaaat far out of warranty so kicking off might well get you somewhere. Worth a try, I'd say.

Bout 4.5 months out. If it's worth anything I do intend on buying a MacBook Pro upon the next revision. Though they probably hear tales of people saying they might not buy if they don't help so that's hardly a threat. If I knew how the work times was it would be fine, don't wanna bump into the same guy again. :p
