So just had a load of ceramic tiles/slabs delivered for the garden and there are maybe 18 tiles broken, doesn't sound too many but thats about £500 worth of tiles.

Not sure how its supposed to work and I assume our contracter will deal with it. Have not had a chance to chat to the contractor yet, will see him tomorrow, just curious as to if some breakage is a given or not......

I’d expect some, it’s the accepted hazard of tiles, but 18 does sound like a lot. Issue is you may end up playing company tennis between store/retailer and Courier.

10% breakage allowance is the norm, sometime up to 20% on fragile tiles. All details should be on the suppliers website.

A quick guestimate at the other unbroken ones it's probably around 10%, maybe a bit more.

They are big assed patio slabs so should not be fragile. Not fussed if it's normal and I expect a lot of them can be used for edges.

Will see what contractor says tomorrow as unsure of supplier to check breakage.

Ta. :)

I wouldn't be accepting any broken on a delivery, if I collected them and they broke on the way that'd be on me but if they're broken on a delivery I'd want them replaced.

That's madness. Who pays for them? Why should you accept any broken.

I'm curious too @200sols. Do you get 10/20% extra added to your order in the event of breakage? Or will the supplier not offer any refunds/replacements if less than 10/20% is broken.

I'm assuming it's the former, as you're unlikely to get away with not supplying 100% of a non-defective product.

Surely you don't accept any that are broken on arrival?
The last lot I recently got for the bathroom (from Tileflair I think) had some arrive broken. I emailed them with pics & they had replacements sent out on a pallet the next day?!
I'm sure it was the same deal with paving slabs too.

Every company will have an acceptable breakage limit, can't recall what mine was but I was lucky to have non *touch wood*

Feels op :(

This is from the site I used as an example:

Please ensure you order a minimum of 10% to 15% more to cover cutting, wastage and the few breaks that could occur in transit and installation - this is very normal within the stone paving industry
Every effort is taken to ensure the stone arrives undamaged, but with it being a natural product, breakages can occur and therefore the first 7% of your order isn’t covered
If the product you purchase is damaged or faulty more than 7% (rounded up to the nearest slab or tile), we may offer the refund as appropriate in accordance with your legal rights
Check your order carefully when it’s delivered for signs of damage and if there is damage, sign for as damaged and take a photo whilst on the pallet prior to unloading
Call us or email to report damage within 24 hours of receiving your pallet
Unfortunately we can’t collect damaged products so please dispose of any damaged products.

They came on 4 pallets, all boxed up and sealed, contractors shifted them round the back of the house today so only noticed the broken ones this evening.

You could accept a few broken ones but given the size and cost of each tile that many broken seems excessive to me. See what they say tomorrow.

*edit, contractor just texted me about it, says its excessive, with this sort of tile he expects 2 or 3 broken and there are 18. He has taken pictures(I didn't notice him here today) and asked for replacements. So hopefully get sorted.

No. @Delvis has posted a copy of a standard t&c of these companies.

1 or 2 in a crate I wouldnt expect replacing, 18.... yes new crate please.

Consumer rights and legislation trump any T&C's a company likes to force on you :D

You payed for an amount of tiles, you should receive said amount in new condition. If there's damage then it's likely a combined issue between shipping and inadequate packaging.

I'm the same as you with breakages. The odd one is acceptable and can be used for cuts at the edge of the perimeter, or be kept as a spare. 18 is a lot no matter what and will be a good half a pallet's worth!
