Timing belt on my Golf MkIV GT TDI went bye bye, end of last week :(. Since its about 12 years old now I was wondering whether to get it fixed or not since it could cost a fortune.

First option is to get a belt on it and see if it will run. I was going to try myself however after reading up on it I've decided I'd probably muck it up, plus the cost of tools etc I'd be just as well getting the garage to look at it. So I phoned the garage today and they are going to pick it up and take a look.

I should start a sweep on how much it will cost lol

I think its done about 55k since it was changed.

It'll be a top end rebuild minimum, were you revving the nuts off it when it went? These cars are still worth half decent money I believe, and you could probably have it going again for less than £1k with an indy.

Some fail safe, some don't, doubt a diesel will need as much compression so it may be OK, the only thing you could do is get a new belt and wind it over by hand off the bottom pulley and see if there is any damage

What?

Diesel engines are always higher compression than petrol counterparts. That's how they work - compression ignition rather than spark ignition.

A Diesel will almost certainly be interference because of the high compression required for a diesel to work.

Macca, I'd suggest you go read up on how a diesel engine works before giving such advice ;)

Actually it was my partner driving it, and she was on a hair pin bend going about 20 when the power just drained. No noises, it basically just died.

I live in hope of a cheap outcome :p

In terms of the schedules I think its change at 60k so it was getting close...course it may have snapped due to another issue such are the water pump collapsing, hopefully the garage will be able to tell me more.

You won't know the full extent until you get the head off. If you've escaped any serious damage to the pistons (its fairly unlikely anyway) then its unlikely to be an extortionate repair, you just need to find the right garage.

If you want to save some pennies, you could always whip the head off and inspect it yourself or with the help of a friend, its reasonably easy to do.

How old is this belt?

No first belt was changed at about 65k, when I realised the dealer didn't seem interested in changing it. I remember phoning the dealer after the service and them telling me they only changed it if I asked them too lol. So much for VW service

Car has done about 120k now, so seems to be due another :p so the car thinks anyway

Sorry meant clearance not compression, I see OCUK motors is still on top form of criticising someone elses advice rather than contributing themselves ;)

find out if the diesel is interference. i think i can remember buying a 1.9tdi years ago that had an invoice for extensive rebuild after the belt went, but find out for sure
