Hi,
I have a 2Mb/s broadband connection with Talktalk. My modem is connecting to the internet, but my Browser (Netscape & IE) cant find a connection. Its not set to "work off line" and its set to "always dial my default connection". I have done a system restore going back 2 weeks, when all was working fine, but that didn't work. Please help. I'm currently using my works PC.

Thank you.

i'm having the same problem as den_cole, the thing is, its only happening on my PC, not on my laptop or my mums laptop.

the PC connects to the internet fine, but all http-based coms fail. so, steam can update, download new games, CS:S can search, find and connect to servers, but all three of my internet browsers cannot connect to any webpage.

my three browsers are Opera 9, Internet Explorer(6) and Mozilla (not firefox)

anyone have any clues what this is?

<edit> oh, and i'm on BT openworld </edit>

You've set it to "always dial a default connection?'

AFAIK there should be nothing in the connections section of IE if you're using always on broadband, because you connect through the router/modem.

Someone can clarify though..

If you have a DSL modem you still create a 'dialup' connection which you connect to, so I should think that the 'always dial ...' would work fine.

Maybe its DNS problems? Simple test, can you ping 82.133.85.65 ?

start > run > ping 82.133.85.65

If you see 'request timed out' or something similar it's not good, however if you see something like:

Pinging jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=57
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=57
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=57
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=57

Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 22ms, Maximum = 24ms, Average = 22ms

It means its working.

i got exactly this:
Code:
Pinging jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=51
Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=51

Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 12ms, Average = 11ms
but still can't surf the internet.

like i said, i can play CS:S, download pr0n, update steam, but not surf.

really annoying me.

whats funky is that i can surf from my laptop (what i'm doing now) and from my mums mactop.

Grrrrrr.

That sounds more and more like a DNS issue to me then. The fact you can ping jolt (the IP above) means it is getting out to the net, as well as the other things you can use.

You could try manually setting your DNS servers. Try following this:

https://hdc.tamu.edu/reference/documentation/?section_id=579

But rather than using the values they give, try, as DNS servers:
DNS Primary: 213.208.106.212
DNS Secondary: 213.208.106.213

dude, i could love you right now.

it was a DNS issue, it was they were set to manual, and there were no entered values. i set them to automatic, just to test, and it worked fine.

thanks SO much!!!! :D :D :p :p
