Been watching this on BBC and it has shown the Alberto oil sands !

It makes you weep what they are doing to the land all in the name of civilisation.

it takes 1 barrel of oil to extract 2 barrels of oil !

IF there is a GOD he must surely weep when he looks down on this.

MOD add the c to title please.

I agree totally. Oil sands, although potentially necessary and profitable, really are a nasty product where the environment is concerned. :(

It's something that divides me, because I am entering that industry, but I aim to not work on anything like that...

I haven't watched it. But I doubt God would care. After all, he is a god. He could smite us Sodom and Gomorrah style if he genuinely cared.

I don't think the OP specifically meant it that only IF there was a God, more than just shock at the general devastation and little appreciation of the land we have. If you watched (and knew what he was talking about) it would make sense rather than commenting blind.

But the oil is on the top of the land (and quite a few metres down) so man isn't devastating the land because it's already ruined.
The devastating part is all the smoke going into the air from the refineries and of course what MIGHT be going into the rivers.

What the way we are raping the natural environment for our oil addiction? The destruction is mind blowing tbh

If you care so much why don't you turn your computer off and go off-line.

One less computer, tv etc to worry about it.

The oil sands are a joke, as it takes so much energy to extract one barrel it hardly makes it worth while.

You hit the nail on the head, I was generalising at the sheer scale of destruction.

You didn't watch it then  the clan chief was showing us were he used to hunt and live. ( now its a F'ing big hole in the ground and all the fish have cists and other weird illnesses and a high proportion of the people die of rare cancers) The land is habitual and was supporting wildlife for 1000's of years.

Of course I watched it, Bruce Parry should be made compulsory.
So much for the Chief embracing his new culture, keeping his headgear as a reminder and working on his Windows 7 PC making a fortune - traitor.
Virtually everybody has a job now whether it's working on the oil sands or being a lap dancer.
Did you watch it? (I don't do roll eyes, very immature)

I thought it was sad that after the fur trade was outlawed his kin had no option other than work the tar sands. Although the other place he visited was great very tranquil.

..... where they are earning 3 to 4 times the normal wage and don't go hungry anymore.

Although the other place he visited was great very tranquil.

Very tranquil but 12 people living in one room and going hungry for periods of time.
That's why they now live in a normal place and just bugger off to the tranquil place for a bit to hunt and then get back to normality.

Surely everything we as humans are doing on this planet is actually totally natural behaviour (otherwise we wouldn't be exhibiting it)? And as a result everything that happens on the planet is natural. Yes it could well be leading to our own extinction (MAD) but it is human nature to develop, create, think, be greedy, be violent, and make life easier for oneself. And that is precisely what we have been doing for millions of years.
