Brundle and Coulthard

There are 2 types of commentator you need in any sport, one is the "narrator", like Murray Walker who conveys the situation in an exciting way, the other is the "colour" the technical expert who is dull as dishwater but provides the factual tech info we need in this day and age, this is typically a player or ex player in most sports.

MB and DC are both colour, dull as dishwater and focus on dull factual info and get a lot of info wrong, ie the stuff Murray got wrong they get wrong but in a far less interesting way.

They seem good to me. DC obviously has some agendas to push and Brundle is a bit like some on here and wants to take F1 backwards 30 years, but generally they do a good job.

I think they're a good pairing, but DC seems to look at the main camera feed more then brundle as he seems to pick up on more that's happening that we can see before martin does. better than James 'i want to penetrate Lewis' Allen

I still think the best combination is Mark Croft/Anthony Davidson/Karun Chandhok. Listening to practice coverage with those 3 on 5Live is brilliant.

The banter between them is great too. Although I do think some of the reason why they are good to listen to is because they are in a much lower pressure environment commentating on FP1/2/3. They can literally have a chat about F1 and occasionally mention something on screen.

Put it this way. At no point in the 2011 season have I raged at something the commentators have said or not said.

That puts them above any pairing since Murray Walker left.

Really, I'm screaming at them everytime there's a outsell or someone does something. They miss everything, don't have a clue about strategies and on top of all that(which should be there strng points) just can't commenters well.

As I have said before turn to r5l and compare the huge difference in quality. The only thing stopping me using them is they keep cutting away to other sports.

I really enjoy their commentary, it's by no means perfect but miles above Leggard and also better than James Allen was.
The 5live commentary is very, very good though. Loved listening to it on the fanvision at the weekend as they also had Murray Walker - I couldn't stop grinning!

Crofty: "Murray, what single word would you use to describe this race?"
Murray: "SANTASTIC!"

Just laughed so much at Murray not deciding whether to say Sensational or Fantastic and instead blending them :p

That's certainly true, and has been exactly what the past lead commentators were... Walker, Allen and Ledgard.

I personally think Brundle has always been great, Coultard though, while I like him, he is too wooden. He also doesn't really chip in all that often. I sort of get the sense half the time that Martin has to try and steer him into speaking, rather than it being natural and flowing between them.

I think what we've lost is somebody who isn't a driver who goes over the top and gets excited, they may get things wrong every now and then.

I personally don't understand the hate for James Allen, he made it sound exciting when it needed to be and reading his blog he certainly knows his stuff. I think people have just never liked Allen because he was Murray's replacement, but he was miles better than Legard.

Maybe he was plugging the race sponsors.
In which case, maybe he ought to have plumped for "SANTANDERFUL!" ;)

I have very few complaints with Brundle and Coulthard; their padding for the Canadian GP was masterful.

I think Brundle, in particular, is doing a great job of providing a hybrid "commentator/colour" delivery.

Though I do wish he'd admit defeat with his cringe-inducingly meaningless "Look, but never stare... [awkwardly long pause before the lights go out]..." attempt at a catchphrase.

I like the scots, but Christ, it grinds my gears when Coulthard says KERS.

James Allen, who I will from now on call Fathead for short was useless as a commentator. Fathead is very well informed on the sport and his written articles are excellent, but give him a microphone and he's a complete tool. If I ever hear a grown man screaming "Go! Go! Go!" again it will be too soon. How on earth MB didn't spark Fathead out I'll never know.

Legard was a great improvement over Fathead, even with his sucky timing usually when he got distracted by something pointless.

MB and DC are doing an excellent job. On balance Murray and James Hunt will never be surpassed but I'll take MB and DC as the best pairing since.

I'm liking that the BBC use Crofty/Ant the Blocker and Chandok for the free practice sessions. The banter is rather amusing...

I like watching F1 with them on it really. Yes they can be a little wooden but they are very informative...anyway I get banter with my mate when we sit and watch it hung over on Sunday mornings.
