Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson has been relieved of first-team duties following talks about his future at the club, BBC Radio Sheffield understands.

The news comes after Robson met club chairman Terry Robinson and plc chairman Kevin McCabe on Wednesday.

Both chairmen told BBC Radio Sheffield the talks had been constructive and there would be "reasoned changes to the football infrastructure".

The Blades sit 16th in the Championship seven points off the relegation zone.

Robson, 50, took charge at Bramall Lane in May, nine days after the Blades' dramatic relegation from the Premier League on the last day of the season.

But despite their pre-season aim of returning to the top flight, United have won just nine of their 32 Championship fixtures, and top scorer James Beattie has only just returned to action after a long lay-off because of a knee ligament injury.

The talks took place in Brussels, Belgium, and were held following a fans protest against Robson after Saturday's goalless draw with Scunthorpe.

BBC Radio Sheffield's Seth Bennett said: "Sheffield United will make clear their plans for a massive restructure of the football club later on Thursday.

"McCabe is expected to reveal a number of other changes to the coaching and management roles in order to improve the Blades' performances, after a disappointing campaign.

"There has not yet been any clue as to what many of the other changes will be."

Sheffield United are due to face Robson's former club Middlesbrough in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, after beating Manchester City in the last round.

I love Robbo hes a legend but he's a shocking manager :/

Horrific managerial record - no doubt pockets a couple of million for termination of contract, and waits for the next mugs to sign him, based purely on his reputation as a brilliant player.

He might takeover Everton on the way then.

Moyes won't be leaving Everton until Fergie retires/dies :p

It will be one of the 3 for you next, which Manu legend would you prefer...

Robson
Hughes
Bruce

;)

I thought Robson was doing OK, certainly got the best out of beattie.

He was not doing OK at all. I haven't seen such lifeless and uncreative football in a long time. And Beattie is a good player anyway, it isn't Robson that has made him good. I am just glad he has finally gone! :)

Beattie was crap at everton. Has the slide coincided with Beatties injury? Where were they in the league before he got injured?

I stand corrected I just saw all the goals beattie had scored flash up every week and thought they must have been getting the job done :)

Hughes wouldn't be a bad choice, did brilliantly with Wales and has done brilliantly with Blackburn.

I was going to point out how "relieved of first-team duties" meant the club was keeping Robson on in some form, but he's turned down their new position and has gone completely. Shame in a way, because he's a rubbish manager, but as some people have said, he's got good contacts for signings.

They've got Blackwell in as a replacement. Isn't he rubbish?

He is absolute cack, but nothing as bad as Robson. :p

Kevin Blackwell?! Oh dear.

Yep, as a lifelong blades fan (Although i cant` get to the Lane as often as i used to), this was/is great news. Robson has never had any success as a manager, and his dull, monotone interviews will not be missed.

Warnock was OK, but his tinkering got us relegated in the end. At the start of this season, we had lost ONE important player, Jagielka. The core of the squad was still there. How can we be so much worse than last year? This has to fall at the managers feet and it has done. I for one shall not miss him.

I am not as disparaging as some others here as regards Blackwell. OK, his track record Is not spectacular, but he knows the surroundings well, which means he will settle in quickly. Relegation is still a possibility, but, so is the play-offs. Long shot I know, but like always in the championship, If you can put a good run together, you can climb the table rapidly.

I wish him well. I think Its quite brave to change the manager now. Its not like we are bottom of the table in dire crisis.
