bsd?

I used FreeBSD for my router at home a long time ago, and at work our main production server runs NetBSD.

It's released under a different licence (BSD, rather than GPL) and so is subject to different restrictions.

It's still open source however, but the focus (mostly it seems) is on security and multi-architecture support (proper multi-architecture including Sparc, ARM etc)
 
i get the liscences one there is a version of bsd called open bsd, implying it is opensource also implying that others arent >?
 
there are many different versions of BSD (Open,Net,dragonfly,Free) afaik they are released under the same license.
 
They're all open source, each just has a different aim - NetBSD strives for a secure system, i don't know about the others.

They're all more or less the same...
 
NetBSD - portability
OpenBSD - security
FreeBSD - seems to be all about being easy to use and feature rich (relatively)
DragonFly BSD - SSI clustering

I've personally used them all and settled on NetBSD, as it's the only one which has given me zero nasty problems :) Though I'd probably recommend FreeBSD or DragonFly BSD for a first timer.
