Hi, I've been having this problem on my sisters computer for the last week now. At first I thought it was a memory issuse, so I ran MemTest and it found errors, so I sent the RAM back and the replacement came today. So I slotted it back in, tried to install XP and right at the end of the install, when it's saving and about to restart I get a BSOD:

Code:
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE _ERROR

STOP: 0x0000007A (0xC07C1D78, 0xC0000185, 0xF83AFA43, 0x10C98860)

NTFS.sys - Address F83AFA43 base at F8360000, datestamp 41107eea

I've tried doing a clean install 5+ times now, with a quick and full format but I keep getting the same error at the same point of the install.

System:
AMD Sempron 3000+ 64Bit (1.8Ghz)
DFI INFINITY NF4X Socket 754 PCI-E Nvidia nForce4 6
Kingston 512MB DDR PC3200 400MHz CL3
Western Digital WD2000BB 200GB 7200RPM ATA/100 2MB Cache

From searching all I can really find is that its a memory or a virus issue. But the memory has been replaced and I'm guessing doing a full format and deleteting the partitions would have removed any viruses on the system.

Any help or suggestions with this problem will be greatly appreciated. :)

You're booting off the Windows Install CD right? So that rules out the possibility of some memory resident/boot sector virus.

I'm afraid this looks like a hardware issue of some kind. Try resetting your BIOS and retrying. If that fails, set your BIOS to "fail safe defaults" and retry again. If it still fails then you have a hardware fault.

Have you used Memtest on the new memory?

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah booting off the XP install CD. Also tried with Ubuntu, that runs off the CD fine, but again won't install. Not tried Ubuntu since the new RAM arrived so I'm not sure what error it gave me.

I've tried running it with fail safe defaults and optimized, both gave the same errors.

Not tried MemTest with the new RAM, just running ChkDsk at the moment and it hit 74%, then went back to 50% and now it's going up 1% every few minutes. So when that has finished I'll give MemTest another go.

Also would putting the RAM in a different slot help?

ChkDsk and MemTest didn't find any errors.

So I put the RAM in a different slot to see if that would help, and it wouldn't get passed the motherboard logo screen. Tried again with the RAM back in the original slot, same thing happened again.

Unplugged the hard drive and it posted fine and I could access the BIOS.

Does anyone know if this is down to the motherboard or the hard drive? Or anyway I can test it to see which part needs to go back?

Thanks for the help. :)

Edit - Forgot to mention above I'd swapped the cable on the HDD. Just swapped it back again and it worked fine. Tried putting the DVD drive and the HDD on the same cable and it wouldn't pick any of them up in the BIOS.

Is this more likely to be a motherboard that needs sending back?

Got it sorted. Just wish I knew how. Decided to just try and install Ubuntu one last time before I gave up. And it installed fine, but after the restart wouldn't boot because of "Error 18". But since I didn't want that installed I gave XP one more chance, and it worked with no problems.

Not sure what happened to make it decide it liked XP, but I'm happy now. :)
