just built a new HTPC today and have been constantly getting the BSOD even when i was installing Vista Ultimate...finally managed to get Vista installed and tried taking a memory stick out at a time and changing the banks so on...its getting really annoying now as it seems to happen right after vista boots up....any ideas folks?

set up is:

1 x Antec NSK2480 MATX Desktop Case Black & Silver - With 380W EarthWatts PSU
1 x OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC with LIFETIME WARRANTY
1 x Pioneer DVR-215DSV 20X SATA DVD±RW DL Int Silver - OEM
1 x Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H GeForce 7100 Socket 775 onboard VGA 8 channel audio mATX Motherboard
1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
1 x Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM
1 x ASUS HD 3650 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI HDTV out PCI-E Graphics Card

i've had a few different messages..i'm at my work at the moment but when i get home i'll fire the PC and take note of what the BSOD says and get back to you. i think its some kinda memory problem to be honest though..when i was installing vista it was very very slow, much slower than when i installed it on my laptop, When i started to install it on my HTPC the BSOD came up a few times but i tried things and removing 1 stick or ram seemed to make it last a bit longer bit the BSODs still came. i have the 2 sticks in just now but the BSOD's seem to come more often?

Hello BigBrisy, sorry I sort of missed your reply to this thread.

Is this the particular memory kit you have - Clickly?

If it is, then try the following:

If you go into the BIOS (When you turn your system on it should say press (Said key) to enter setup/BIOS). Now, I'm not quite sure how the BIOS is exactly laid out for your particular motherboard so please bare with me. Once you are in the BIOS, have a look for "Advanced" settings and then followed by either "Northbridge" or "Memory" settings. Once you have located the section where your memory settings are located, make sure it resembles the following;

DRAM Frequency - 800MHz

Memory Voltage - 2.0V

CAS - 4
TRCD - 4
TRCD - 4
TRAS - 12

Once you have set the above values, save and exit the BIOS. :)

yep thats the very memory fire wizard

I had a look at the memory settings within the bios and as far as i could see you could only change the DRAM frequency, the setting was to auto and set at 800mhz...will look again incase there is any other settings i can go into and i'll come back to you

okay i have a motherboard tweaker option in my bios but it only allows you to change the cpu host frequency which is currently 200mhz and the memory frequency which is 800mhz just now....in the pc health menu it does show the memory voltage to be 1.8v but you cant change it?

should have kept my mouth shut....yeah the BSOD has stopped but vista keeps freezing on me now and i have to reboot it all the time...any idea's?

Sounds like memory or PSU problems mate. I would try to increase the voltage to the RAM, and possibly try reseating the CPU Cooler, as Not enough contact could cause it to be overheating in a very short time.

Or possibly your PSU is not up to the job and could do with a bigger one, with stronger 12V Rails for the GFX card.

the cpu is fine, been keeping an eye on temps and its sitting just under 30 degrees. Think i'm gonna have to change the memory though, the ram i bought is meant to run at 2.1v but i cant seem to change this on my mobo, i eventually found the ram timing option by pressing ctrl and F1 in bios but definatley nothing for changing voltage...:(

well ended up going to one of my little local pc shops and picked up some cheap pc6400, made sure what i was getting was okay to run at 1.8 volts and it seems to have done the trick, no BSOD's, no freezing and in general running smoother. just goes to show that you cant always rely on the bigger named brands or memory?

Hi Fire Wizard

The system is totally fine now with this cheap A-Data memory, its a pity thoguh that i cant up the voltage on the memory so i could have used the OCZ memory, hopefully someday they will update the bios that will allow you to do it, shame though cause the OCZ stuff is real pretty....lol
