BSOD with GTX 580

"Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from time out failed"

As the title suggests, I've been having some problems with my GTX 580 3gb Phantom. I'm using it in the Sabertooth 990FX board with a 1100T AMD processor.

The problems started with my screen going black, then coming back on with the error message in the bottom right "The display driver stopped working" sometimes it has a kernel error. I was worried about it but a friend of mine who also has a GTX 580 said he had the same error and black screen issue after updating to the most recent drivers. So I figured it was a driver issue and that a new one would be released.

However last night while playing BF3 I had several complete crashes as in system reboot and finally a BSOD. And now I cannot boot up my machine in anything except safe mode.

If I try to boot it normall when it gets to the point where windows login is supposed to pop up it BSOD's with the message "Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from time out failed".

I have tried using a driver wiping tool to completely remove all display drivers and then reinstalling new ones this just resulted in the same BSOD. I'm not sure what to try next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have also done a registry fix/clean.

It has never been working. This was a fresh install of Windows 7 and it has always had that "display driver stopped working" issue. But as my friend had said he had the same issues I thought it was a driver problem that there was no way round.

I'm sure I have, but I can double check when I get home. I don't suppose anyone has a link indicating which is the x16 slot on the sabertooth 990FX board

I haven't run furmark occt. Will I be able to do that in safemode?

The display driver has stopped working message doesn't necessarily mean the fault is with the graphics card. It could be RAM or a number of different components. I had a very similar problem and ended up replacing most of my rig only for the problem to be a stick of RAM that would pass memtest for days on end but would not pass Prime95 blend test. The first thing I would do is set BIOS to defaults and run memtest on a stick at a time. If that passes then run Prime 95 blend one stick at a time.

How do you run a mem test? Do you mean just booting with 1 stick of ram at a time and checking it is recognised?

I have had memory issues, I'm using Corsair XM3 4GB sticks 1600mhz.

Similar to these - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-205-CS

But mine are 4gb sticks.

So I've got 16gb in my machine in total, but my motherboard auto recognises the memory as 1333mhz. If I set it manually to 1600mhz I get Blue screen of deaths all the time during regular or gaming use. Even if I tweak the voltage and other recommended settings it still operates very unstable. So I have been running at 1333mhz. Mainly because I don't care if it's slightly slower as long as its stable but clearly if I'm having this issue and if it turns out to be RAM related then it's not stable.

I would really appreciate any help to resolve this issue. As it's driving me nuts! And I really should be able to get my 1600mhz ram recognised as that with the Sabertooth 990FX board I don't see why it should be a problem. I'm not doing any overclocking

Okay I just ran a Furmark test as suggested. And choose the "Burn in" test. It was running without a problem, then it paused and popped up this error message.

"The NVIDIA OpenGL driver lost connection with the display driver due to exceeding the Windows Time-Out limit and is unable to continue. The application must close.

Error code: 7"

I understand that the windows time out is something that I can extend or remove (although I don't know how to do it). But surely a GTX 580 with 3gb memory should not be struggling to render graphics?

Another connected issue I'm having is while using firefox, like just now very occasionally firefox will freeze and then up the top will say (not responding) after a few seconds it will recover. My internet connection is great and I'm not doing anything else on the PC. I believe this is related.

Can anyone offer help or suggestions? I'm very worried about my brand new rig

I ran a bios update and I am now on the latest bios version. But on boot up I got the same BSOD. I'm going to try and remove one stick of ram and see how that helps.

I removed a stick of Ram and the system booted. I went to run FurMark and the screen went black the computer reset.

However once it had booted up again I managed to run the FurMark for 15 minutes with no errors what so ever.

Any I haven't had the "display driver stopped working" yet.

I take it you were running 4 sticks of 4gb? that is putting quite a strain on the memory controller and may need 1.8v. just run 1 stick of 4gb and test for stability using prime95 blend test. look to pass between 8 and 12 hours. if it passes swap the stick with another one and repeat test. do this until you have checked all sticks individually. i know its a pain in the arse but its the only way. my bet is either a faulty stick or your mobo isn't liking the the 4 sticks config.

I think it's the 4 stick config not working with my mobo.

I have not yet done an individual memory stick test. But last night I removed 1 stick and the computer ran fine all night.

With the blend test do I just leave it running and as long as no errors come up I just hit exit and end the test?

If I do a 8 - 12 hour test on each stick that might take a while :P. Would I be better just running a blend test on the 3 sticks I have installed now?

Also should I be adjust the memory frequency or upping my voltage for the 3 sticks?

Personally i would just run two sticks of 4gb@1600mhz at the voltage suggested by corsair. i think its 1.8v. run the pc as you normally would today and then when you go to bed run prime95 blend overnightand check it in the morning. if there are no errors then you could add your additional sticks and retest. you would probably need to upp the voltage a bit more though. do you really need the 16gb? i have a very similar rig to you and for what i do my 4gb of corsair has been fine. 8gb would be more than enough.

I don't need 16gb but I would prefer to keep the 12gb if I can get it stable.

I have a feeling however that with the Sabrtooth 990FX board I might struggle getting the frequency up to 1600mhz without causing instability. I can't find any guides for the Asus bios when adjusting the memory frequency.

Just try my suggestion for 8gb first and test for stability. unfortunately getting a troublesome rig stable takes a bit of time. get it playing nicely with two sticks first and then work on stabilising the 16gb together.
