BSOD without any overclock. What could be the problem?

Hi all,

So i was just watching netflix on my main rig, got to the end of the program and 5 seconds later it BSOD.

The error code is 124 which i would normally associate with lack of voltage to the CPU when overlocking. However, at the moment i have absolutely no overclock on my CPU.

My initial thought would be that this is down the the motherboard failing... is that the issue here?

Rig details in Sig.

[yoda] One blue screen does not a post make [/yoda] ;) :D

The occasional blue screen is nothing to worry about really.

Humm, i do sort of agree but on the other hand. If i had an Asus board, this wouldn't happen, i'm sure of it.

124 error can be not enough cpu voltage and/or not enough cpu/vtt

maybe try 1.10v cpu/vtt

the voltage is on auto atm anyway, i could set it but i cant see how that would help? the motherboard should be coping with this anyway.

One thing i have noticed this afternoon... Decided to open cpuz and see what voltage my cpu was taking idle and under load. I found out that cpu reports a 4.6ghz overclock while the BIOS is set to auto... How is this possible? im pretty sure my eyes still function and im reading it right...

EDIT: Yep, absolutely certain. All clocks and voltages are set to default/auto and CPU-z reports 4.6ghz.

I would go into your BIOS and confirm the CPU-Z reading. If it's right then you will need to up your core voltage a tad or reduce your overclock.

Yea, i did check. I have overclocked sereral systems before so its not the overclocking i have an issue with.

The BIOS is literally all at stock/default/auto settings. i recently did a clear CMOS because of a bootup issue i was having.

Well it's weird that CPU-Z is reporting a 4.6GHz overclock when the CPU is at stock. That's a new one on me.

Maybe re-install CPU-Z. :D

I'd still up your vcore a tad though if the BSOD's persist.

Cheers, will probably do both of those. Although im not sure how to turn it up when its not currently on a set value...

auto is fine on some things, but with 16gb of memory auto doesn't set the right voltage for the integrated memory controller inside the cpu (cpu/vtt)

8gb then stock/auto 1.05v is fine,16gb will need more maybe 1.10v max safe is 1.2v but you wont need that much

To be honest, it sounds like i should just get on and tune my system back to 4.6 properaly and then everything would be OK?

124 error can be not enough cpu v or cpu/vtt (memory controller voltage)

even at stock it can happen, upto you to overclock again either way you need to be stable

agreed. slight spanner in the works. done a full new download and reinstall of cpuz and it is still reporting 4.6ghz overclock. This leads me to suggest there is something stray with the BIOS?

did you load optimised defaults in the bios? that should reset to stock, any software overclock profiles in windows? that could be applying the oc once in windows
