Now bt are going on about "free" uk calls at the weekend fair enough

But they are increasing evening calls by a stupid amount (5p to 65p for a hour)

So how do you change providers and what drawbacks are there? Was looking at sky which is £5 a month which some how includes NZ calls which is where parents r so be brill

(i know i still have to pay bt the rental)

a 1200% price increase...nice.

at home my mum has talktalk just for calls which always seems cheap as hell when the bill comes, i think you just ask whichever new provider you want that you want them and theyll do the rest. although 1 thing to note with talktalk was that however they direct their calls through your bt line it placed some kind of block on our line that meant according to all broadband providers we didnt have a phone line and cudnt get their internet. that was sorted after about 700 hours of bt and talktalk blaming each other though.
although that shudnt be a problem unless you want to switch bb providers.

Probably works out cheaper using a mobile? Especially if you have one of those price plans where you nominate friends....

I received an online update couple of days back about the free weekend calls and a couple of other changes but can't see the increase in evening calls, have they hidden it away somewhere?

How about... just pay the line rental and get Skype or some other VoIP phone thing.. very cheap calls..

Just use the house phone to receive calls / emergencies.

Edit:
Calls with skype per minute... 2nd figure includes VAT where applicable.

New Zealand £ 0.012 £ 0.014
New Zealand - Mobile £ 0.176 £ 0.202
United Kingdom £ 0.012 £ 0.014
United Kingdom - Mobile - Hutchison3G £ 0.144 £ 0.166
United Kingdom - Mobile - O2 £ 0.144 £ 0.166
United Kingdom - Mobile - Orange £ 0.144 £ 0.166
United Kingdom - Mobile - Others £ 0.144 £ 0.166
United Kingdom - Mobile - Tmobile £ 0.144 £ 0.166
United Kingdom - Mobile - Vodafone £ 0.144 £ 0.166

So thats basically 1p a minute for landline calls, to UK and NZ, and 14p for mobile calls in the UK and 20p for mobile calls in NZ.

Thanks for that ste_bla. I certainly didn't notice that in the update I received. I pay by monthly direct debit with on-line billing so when I receive an on-line invoice every quarter I'm always a little in credit so tend not to read the small print too often. This evening increase certainly slipped by me as I expect it will many other users. :(

Sky also do line rental Ste_Bla - not too sure if this would suit you or not but further information can be found here

"from 4.5 pence for calls up to an hour, to 1.5 pence per minute and a 6p set-up fee will apply." So a call for 60mins now costs 96p if I understand that pdf right? What's UK5? :p

I use Virgin Cable with SipGate VOIP. No line rental and you pay per call. For my usage, this works out cheaper than paying line rental each month.

I also have a PAYG mobile with O2. For £10 a month, I have 500 mins to call 02 and landline phones from a designated postcode and plenty of texts. I top up £10 every 1.5 - 2 months.

This covers most things.

I hate all this talk of 'free' these days.

Actually.. it'll cost 96p per hour, not 65p.. that's absolutely disgusting! (Changing from 4.5p per hour, to 1.5p per minute with a 6p setup fee)

My bad i cant add correctly! and bloody hell, i thought 65p was enough so that means if i made 5 1hour calls in the evening it be cheaper paying sky for unlimited calls! Seems crazy tbh.

Hmm thats seems good so getting the line rental with them would save a bit also, i'll give them a call later

I tried that a while back but with my rubbish ISP and 1/2 meg connection it wasn't the best, plus then I would want to buy some skype wireless phone sets which means it would take near on a year to break even (unless they are below £50 now?)
