BT are upgading my area to fiber

The cap is why I'm leaving BT. My third month in a row of being reduced to 1mb in the evenings. Most of bandwidth is taken up with streaming and the rest with Sky Player downloads.

The speeds you get on FTTC are apparently dependant on how many people are on the service on each cab. Early adopters will see 35Mb/s+ but that will drop to the 22Mb/s that BT service quotes once the cab is 30% full even if they are close to the cab.
Whether BT will add a second cab once the first reaches 30%, or if the speeds will be allowed to drop further is yet to be seen, but knowing BT ...

This isn't a bandwidth limit of the fibre back from the cab to the exchange, but a limitation of the VDSL hardware in the cab itself.

This is why we need fibre to the home, It's all very well to harp on about "Superspeed Broadband" but as soon as people actually start adopting it speeds are going to drop significantly.

Well my exchange is a planned to have FTTH soon after it gets FTTC. 100Mbps :D, although I don't think these speeds will be offered for some time. Either way 40Mbps/10Mbps connection would be great.

Just as a side note on this thread - my area has been upgraded and I went to the site to sign up.

There's a catch that people might need to be aware of - BT supply you with a separate VDSL modem and router. Obviously, the modem needs it's own power source, which we don't have by the master socket...*sigh*

Not really a catch, is it. 'The sneaky vermin didn't tell me my modem and router would need mains electricity'.

Whichever genius decided not to install the network socket next to a power socket - blame them.

I don't think Virgin have plans to expand there network, only to new housing developments I think..

It seems they're going by the Email I received from Virgin:

Your address is within our current digital overbuild project area.
Our Fibre Optic Broadband & Digital TV Services will be available to you at the end of July 2010.

As Virgin media have pretty much half my town On there coverage minus my little newly developed Apartment block across the bridge from centre of town i sent them an email to look into this as it is quite frustrating im right next to there coverage area and on a ceompeltely different exchange.

Virgin got back to me with,

"Hi Craig

Thank you for your email regarding provision of cable services.

I will ask Mike Birch, the local New Build Officer for the area to examine this in detail and look at whether we can take this further.

This may take 7 to 8 weeks to achieve so please bear with us. As soon as we have some definite information, we will of course let you know.

Mike - please investigate and report back.

Thanks

Erin

It seems they actualy could wire up my side of town a small part not so difficult as most of the infracstructures already in place *rolls eyes* All from my little email.

Any chance you could let me know what email address you wrote to :)

Well BT have just installed their Fiber Optic in my area and they just left a few hours ago after installing in my home

The first time I am not going to complain about BT;

Yeah, that is the thing, I would be almost happy with my 3MB but the 100GB limit a month ruins it. If I wasn't into gaming then it would be great. Except for the price, I have to use my own router (two HH's lose connection when they feel like it) and I can't stream HD.

Oh and if their support wasn't in India.

Now enjoy your 100gb FUP limit hahaha!!! BT sucks! I hate my internet cos of this 100gb limit and on a 40mb connectoin it wud be SO EASY TO hit it.

Its not a 100GB limit, the fair usage policy states that if you exceed the 100GB per month you will be capped between 5pm and 12am, so you can still get all your downloading done outside of those hours.

And between 5 and 12 you get 1Mbps, not much but you can still do most things

I have already exceeded the 100GB limit for June and right now (12:11am) I am getting 4.1MB/s

Looks good, how far form the green box are you?

Does the VDSL router show line stats like ADSL? Would be interested to see them if so.

Thanks,
Michael

I really do agree, but what is the use if you can't use your internet in the evenings when you need it most. I get that you can download as much as you like but you are restricted when it matters most.
