Bt Broadband 0.1mbps

I've got a similar problem to FrannoBaz  only been with BT for 5 days

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1408 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 198 kbps

Why is the IP profile set at 250kbps?

Any idea how I can get the frankly useless call centre operatives to change this?

Do BT have a "cooling off period" (as I have only been with them 5 days!) and would I bet better off going somewhere else?

Thanks

Woody, you can't go anywhere else for 12 months (I believe BT lock you into another 12 months contract when upgrading.)

You need to wait 10days before you can log a fault. When that is over assuming you still have a profile of 250Kbps and a stable connection ask them to reset your profile due to it being stuck. Remain adamant this is what is needed.

If I were w00dy I would definitely cancel your BT contract right away. They will hook you into 12-18 month contracts and they are hopeless. Their customer support sucks and they don't know what they are talking about.
They have also started capping loads of customers to ridiculously slow speeds during peak times and weekends. I am syncing at 8128kbps but get around 50kbps download speeds during peak times.
There are better providers out there for a cheaper price.

so true. I actually suspect BT of foul play...

For the first 7 days that you an cancel your contract in, they were polite, we had good speeds, (I was getting 300kbps of steam, and speedtest.net was showing 2000kbps out of 3000kbps).

As soon as my 7 days to cancel it were gone, the broadband went down the drain. suddenly I was downloading max @ 30kbps and it somtimes goes down to bytes per second. Didnt even know that was possible

maybe it was a co incidence.....

Mines gone to 50kb/s aswell!

Going to phone BT tomorrow to see whats going on!

They will just ask you to delete your cookies, etc. I found them to be absolutely hopeless, but maybe you will have more luck.
They don't admit that they cap speeds.

Im sure some threats of leaving for Virgin Media will change their tune :p

Ill also get the thing upgraded to 8mb (We ordered out package back in 2001 or whenever, never changed it, took 2 years to get 2Mb when people were getting it when signing up  )

If the tell me that **** ill tell em that to get bent and get me someone who knows wtf they are on about!

Just a warning - if you upgrade from 2MB to 8MB with BT, they hook you into another 12-18 month contract...
If you are thinking about upgrading to 8MB, it's best to leave and go elsewhere.

Yep.
Check out their 8MB "unlimited", "super-fast" connection:

4 people are using that ^^ it's ridiculous.

I bet it will be some sodding Indian as well. (Not being racist but its bloody annoying that a UK person phones someone 5000 miles away for **** all service!)

Ill demand to talk to someone in the UK. Hell I have all day tomorrow..

Im really ****** off at this!

Can't even game at the same time now

Yep.
Look what a BT employee just posted on the BT support newsgroup:

Well thats it I've had it with BT broadband and the crap download speeds at
an evening (downloading a gfx driver from nvidia at 54kb/s) on my supposed
7.5meg line. The thing that makes it so bad is that I'm prepared to pay
another provider to give me a service BT can't (as an employee I get BT
Total Broadband option 3) for nothing. I can't imagine how p*ssed off you
lot that pay for this poor service feel.

LOL.

Thats added to my arsenal for tomorrows fun argument.

I bet you any money that the guy will tell me to do xxx or clear cookies or whatever.

Ill tell him I know more about my PC and the internet that he will ever know! they assume every person who phones up is a complete idiot

Just remember guys that adsl max running at 8mb does not mean you get 8mb. All they do is throw 8mb of data at you and whatever gets through is what you get.

I've had a recurring problem with my max connection where it drops down to the BT default of 100k. This seems to be caused by a dodgy line which I should hopefully have had fixed now.

From what I can figure out the max service works out the maximum stable line speed for you and delivers it. This can mean your syncing at 7.5mb but you might still only get 4mb download as that is that can be stabally provided. If there is ever a small fault on the line or the speed fluctuates for any reason, the BT bot goes nuts and resets you down to the lower speed until your line has stabalised again. Once your stable it takes 3 days running at this constant stabilty for the bot to throttle your line back up again to normal speeds.

If you've been at 100k for a while now this would suggest to me that something on your line is causing the BT bot to think you can't stabally handle a higher speed so it will never send it to you.

After skimming down this thread, is the op using wireless or rj45?

I installed a new filtered faceplate on my master socket, disconnected wire 3 (old fashioned ringer) and switched back to wired, benefits now include web pages loading timely, speedtest.net showing 4.5mbs off peak (was 0.9mbs) and I can now actually shhot and kill people on bf2 where on wireless and pre upgrades to hardware I was seeing the enemy and getting murdered seconds before I even got a shot away.

No they don't. That would leave you with a connection that didn't work.

I've had a recurring problem with my max connection where it drops down to the BT default of 100k.

The default IP profile or sync rate isn't 100k anything. If the profile's dropping to 100kbps or 100kB/s (which would be the 1152kbps profile), your sync rate's dropping low enough to trigger that.

From what I can figure out the max service works out the maximum stable line speed for you and delivers it.

Sort of. The sync rate is allowed to adapt as with any other ADSL service, but there's an IP profile controlling your throughput (which is a necessity or you'd get a whole load of traffic loss).
It isn't working anything out though, just constantly applying a rule, and it's a bit of a misnomer to say it's your stable rate.

This can mean your syncing at 7.5mb but you might still only get 4mb download as that is that can be stabally provided.

Again, sort of. The IP profile will increase if the 7.5Mbps is stable for long enough, but there is the possibility that you could be synching higher than the next profile step and won't get the throughput that goes with it. It's not a matter of what can be stably provided, just the IP profile that's been set.
7.5Mbps = 7680kbps = 6.5Mbps IP profile as well.

If there is ever a small fault on the line or the speed fluctuates for any reason, the BT bot goes nuts and resets you down to the lower speed until your line has stabalised again.

You're allowed a number of blips before the profile drops.

This (aaisp.net.uk) explains a lot, and has a list of the IP profile steps (though there have been some added at the bottom end since that was written).
