My father in law has just bought his first computer, so tonight we set it all up and all seemed to be going fine. We then came to install the BT software and the voyager 210 ADSL modem and things started to turn pair shaped. The install went fine, but we have been unable to connect to the net.

I called BT tech support who have old me there is a problem in the local area, although the only problem I can see on the BT status page was cleared this morning. I think I have been fobbed off, but I have no experience with ADSL being a cable user.

So far we have power, DSL and ethernet lights on on the modem, no internet light. Any suggestions on where to go from here. I will be trying again tomorrow night.

Thanks guys.

It may be the obvious but have you configured your Firewall to allow the BT software access to the net? Play around with the filters maybe, also reboot/ power on/off the modem.

Thanks for the reply.

In each popup that norton fired out at me I said to allow all trafic, most of those were the BT software I'll look further tonight. I have actually tried with Norton Internet Security disabled (although how disabled it is I'm never to certain).

I left it all fully shut down so it should be nice and fresh when i get back to it.

Try it with your Windows firewall also off. The 210 router they sent me uses; Username: [email protected] and password: BT

I didn't use their software, I just pluged it into the computer via ethernet and it worked straight away. The Internet light should be on I think ....... could well be a problem with BT.

Try resetting the router and having it just pluged into the phone and power. It should connect to the net and the internet light should come on.

Cool, thanks I'll give thata try also.

Noob question, but is the connection always on or do you need to 'connect'?

if the dsl light is on and the internet light is off then it's probably a problem with the modem logging in. Try a reboot and check settings.

OK at the risk of sounds very stupid. where do i check these settings?
(Sorry all very different to cable modems)

Sorry for not replying folks, been at father in laws. All working now, so might have been either a problem with BT or the router not working properly until restarted.

Many thanks for help.

hang on a sec, is this the bt voyager 2100? ie is it a router that you can plug more than one pc into?
He said 210, this model has one ethernet port (for use as a router) and a usb plug (for use as a modem).

Glad you got it working!

Cheers Bull.

tbh the modem looks like a load of crap to me. I wish he'd followed my advise and bought a decent one. Oh well at least this was free from BT :)
