Hi guys, I need to start sorting my finances out so that means trying to cut costs in all areas, I'm curruntly with BT broadband 8mb and as I have Sky I was thinking of taking up the £5 8mb dsl that they offer, so are Sky broadband any worse than BT broadband ?, anything I should be aware of ?, I know both isp's are not rated that greatly I just don't want to go from bad to terriable.

thanks kindly.

Well, my experience so far with sky has been very much mixed. Now the service is finally up and running, it's pretty good, the problem was that we ended up with no broadband for about 3 weeks due to a wiring cockup and customer service was patchy at best. The manager who actually sorted it for us was great, and had the problem fixed in under 24 hours with plenty of contact to keep us informed. However we spoke to two other managers there who were utterly useless and just wanted to pass the buck between them.

Of course, this can happen with any company, we could have just been unlucky with who we spoke to and so on.

On the plus side, the ordering was quick, the wireless router arrived quickly, and most of the staff have been very friendly.

I have recently moved from Demon to Sky after getting the SKY+.
To be honest sky have so far been fantastic. I've not had any issues at all. I'm on the 8 meg service and the speed is actually better than Demon was.

The free Netgear router you get is pretty good aswell once you flash it to the latest netgear firmware.

I've had Sky max for over a year. Syncing at 15Mb with good throughput. After a few initial problems (slow router delivery etc.) it has been rock solid. I'd budget in costs for a decent email provider (as Sky's seems poor / flakey) and webspace if you want it (as Sky doesn't provide webspace).

Yup I'd agree with the above comments except for a couple of things.

I have two phone lines into my house. I have Sky on one sync'ing at around 14.5mb and an Entanet 8mb office connection on the the other.

The Sky line is great except for peak times when latencies go through the roof, so online gaming just is'nt an option with it, also the contention really is noticable at times. On the Enta line I have never seen any such issue but it costs a lot more than the Sky BB connection so what do you want for £10 p/m.

But for general browsing, downloading & streaming Sky is just fine.

ummmm, I wonder if that would work, I'm guessing with my luck though they would just bill me for the extra bandwidth and refuse to terminate my acc.

edit - I've just been thinking, I get traffic shapped from 9 in the morning till 12 at night, surely I could use that to break out of my contract somehow ?

How long have you been in the BT contract? Mines just ticking over month on month as i have been with them for a good few years, i recently phoned up to complain about the costs and say i was leaving and they lowered the price of the option 3 package i was on to £19.

new 12 month contract for that? :P

I have been with BT for about 4 years now and they have been fine up until a few month back, dont get me wrong its always working pings are fine but at peak times you get capped, people with 4meg lines and more are getting 576k speeds at 8 at night and if you want to torrent your just getting 5k during those times (unless you alter some client settings but it dosent always work)
www.thinkbroadband.com i would take a look on there.
