BT Broadband + Wireless

I set up my wireless network pretty much hassle free in a couple of minutes. (Blueyonder + Linksys router).

Now im trying to set up a friends but shes on BT Broadband that uses USB. She bought a Netgear wireless adsl modem/router and asked me to set it up. Anyway 1st thing she didnt have a NIC on her PC, so i went n bought 1 and installed it. I tried setting the router up and everything but it doesnt seem to work. I have the phone line going into the router, the network cable going from the router to the network card. Is that correct? no need for the BT Yoyager modem?, i cant see how that would connect? its not needed in the diagrams shown in the netgear manual. I then go through the setup wizard for the router and that works fine. I then try and set up a manual internet connection, puttin in her existing BT userame, password etc, but it thinks its using the 56K modem :confused:

wen it connects it just says no dial tone. When i try and connect to the router or ping it, nothing happens? Now im totally lost, its been 4 years or so since i was on adsl, and have no idea whats going on.

Any ideas?

Is it something to do with DHCP? im not sure what that is

The router should have options in it's web interface for the username and password - you don't enter them on the PC nor do you need a "manual internet connection", but the manual and setup wizard should've taken you through that.

It's unlikely to be DHCP because if it was, the machine wouldn't get an IP and the setup wizard should've thrown an error.

You don't need to set up an Internet Connection as such on her PC.

I'd try running the network setup wizard ont the PC and choose the 'This computer connects via a gateway or another computer on the lan' option (not those exact words, but thats the gist).

However, if you are able to access the Router setup pages then it sounds like this bit is ok already. You should be able to see if the router is connected to the internet and if it this then your work is done!
