hello all.
so since the sad loss of my dad, mum has decided she needs a laptop to sort all there finances, meetings, and other things that mums do.
at the mo there is 1 master socket and a bt installed extension socket upstairs in the study.
mum wants the laptop downstairs in the dining / kitchen.
a bt engineer is comming out tomorrow to fix a problem with the phone line outside the house, so i thought of asking him to ( heres £30 ) fit another socket in the room were the laptop is going to be to save the wireless kit going upstairs or all the way down the other end of the house.
would a socket in the same room as the laptop running wireless have a faster connection to that of a socket upstairs or a socket in another part of the house ?
many thanks

It all depends really on your Wireless modem, it shouldn't be too big to just store upstars, all you need is to plug 2 cables in, the telephone and the Power.

They you can still go downstairs on your laptop wirelessly and use the internet.

The router ought to be in the master socket always, most reliable & fastest connection that way. Sometimes they just won't connect in an extension socket.

ah ha, thanks for pointing that out
bt man wont have a wedge going his way then
master socket it is then

thanks for helping me out both of you :)

A BT engineer would do a good job of wiring an extension for adsl they have been doing it for years. A new BT one should be better than the old possibly self instal extension sockets.

As all extensions from the master socket involve more joints and short sections of wire theres some therotecal possibility of a degraded signal but as most telephone signals travel kilometres through many joins just to get to the house its allmost certainly not critical.

If your signal was marginal or your aiming for adsl max 22 mbps speeds it could make a difference but 'mum's usually prefer not to have to hoover or dust round the router plugged into the master socket and tend not to notice 6 mbps vs 8 .

You will get the blame for unsightly equipment but are unlikley to get flak for 'slower' broadband at a convenient location
