BT fair usage policy

BT offer an Option 3 package of 'unlimited downloads' but apparently if you go over 100GB a month, they drop your speed down to 1Mb.....

not a chance am on that and i have far exceeded that many times over a year with no cap or speed limits

Its unlimted "usage" not unlimited downloads.....plus fair usage policy.
Thats my understanding.

100GB's a lot....what the devil are you downloaing? ;)

Welcome to 50% packet loss in the evenings, insane traffic throttling from 5pm til 1am (yes I know it says midnight) almost unplayable gaming performance (30+% PL and lag spikes) laggy browsing, dialup speeds on some protocols and so on...

Soon as I have contract stuff sorted, etc. I'm off to another ISP.

EDIT: It seems to be something BT have just started enforcing - I've seen 4 threads on this matter over the last few hours on different forums and complained about it myself about a week ago when I got the same email - hopefully it will become widespread enough to hit the news and get BT some bad press.

100gig isn't that much if you have a few people sharing the same connection... I only use 20-25gig personally - but then add in 5 other users of varying useage and it soon adds up - we usually only hit 60-80gig but this month we are way over 100gig :(

They came off 2nd worse in a survey recently for internet speed, Toscali supprise supprise were worse. I left Toscali couple of months back for O2, they are awesome. I could not play Xbox Live during peak hours with Toscali, whereas O2 I experience no lag, capping etc whatsoever. I don't take the mick though and only tend to download anything over night should I need to which is quite rare.

just got told off bt that i used 80gig in july and if i use 100 il get throttled, funny iv been throttled for the past 2-3 years at peak times. and im only getting 1meg to start with.

guess i should call them and ask them why im already throttled :D

been throttled by bt as well but i seem to get capped from 10am till midnight even tho the email said 5 12 my max dl speed was 820 now its approx 32 so got me mac and transferring to postoffice unlimited for £25 pm which also includes my line rental

LOL...i got that mesage form BT too about having exceeding the 100Gb ...and it was only the 10th day of the month :D

But seriously....they have been doing this for the last two years to me anyway....only the last month or two they have been sending out these emails. I know its a pain..but I download msotly at night anyway...and you tend to get full speed arround 1am in the morning until 10am or so next day.

true toxic, im just a tad bemussed by the threat of being capped and throttled when i have sod all to cap and have been throttled for years.

should be a fun phone call tomorow see if they can explaine it a bit for me the poor simple internet user.

I'm on Sky and I'm constantly connected to work via FTP, transferring rather large database files to and from our servers.

This sometimes reaches 300 - 350gb p/m and Ive been doing this now for around 2 years. Not once have have Sky ever sent me a single communication moaning about my usage and it costs me £10p/m.

I did ring them up about 18mths ago to ask if my usage was too high and the guy just said 'dont worry, it's fine'.

Now they aren't perfect by any stretch mate but that just sounds **** from BT and I'd be shifting my business asap.

Some of the above reasons are exactly why I won't be signing up with BT when I move house.

They are pretty poor to say they are one of the 'big players' in ADSL broadband.

Thats what I'm gonna do - once this 30 days is up if they continue throttling I'm going straight to the top and making a good go at it - before moving to another ISP just coz this is so bang out of line.

Im currently on an unlimited download package, speeds of upto 8mb, (barely get 4mb at best of times) £25.00 per month, the throttling is so bad in the evenings i sometimes think im back on 56k.

I believe the £10pm package on Sky is truly unlimited with no fair usage policy.

Its the only mainstream internet connection I know about which has no FUP. However, O2/Be only initiate FUP when downloads are ridiculous. 300GB a month would be fine from what I've read on the be forums.

edit;

Some stuff is throttled back to dialup speeds :( its annoying... I can only use spotify in the evenings by masquerading its traffic otherwise its limited to 2.8KB/s.

I cant even use youtube some nights its that bad, i used to play a lot of cod4 online in the evenings, but thats pretty much a no no now, things seem to have got worse since renewing the contract with bt a few months ago.

The online gaming aspect is one of the deciding factors that we are probably going to be moving... 30% packetloss and a 50ms increase in ping times once we hit the core network isn't acceptable by any standard.

EDIT: I've not actually had any problems with youtube lately - tho the HD ones are a bit slow loading - but iplayer crawls to a halt come peak times (and if I plug in my vodafone mobile internet its fine on there so its not the BBC end - but I don't have the useage allowance on voda to make use of that).

I was frequently penalised by BT for exceeding my cap, so I told them where to go and am now using Virgin with , thus far, no problems. :)
