BT hate me

Unless thats an error 2175 EOS in 5 hours uptime is just insane... I'm suprised you have an 8Mbit sync with those stats...

Loads of errors and line has been forced into interleaving mode... with very low SNR - the lowIP profile is due to line conditions spiking it down causing a low sync event...

Something is seriously amiss with that line.

EDIT: If its been fine in the past - then my gut feeling is somewhere along the line the damp has crept in with the weather turning towards winter now and a few wet days of late.

You're getting more than me Deadbeat, and I don't exactly haev time to call my ISP and moan either till Christmas :(

Currently getting:

LukeXT will confirm my net is absolutely horrendous! Local exchange can handle 3.6Mbps max according to the exchange information and isnt due an upgrade till 2012

The errors the BT guy may well have fixed, The main socket wiring was a bit hashed - my dad built the place, and while a BT engineer fitted the line, a sparky wired the extension sockets. All bar the one in my room (where the router is) are now disconnected, so errors shouldn't be such an issue. Will resetting my router give a better picture of this?

I've had years of issues with BT. Sacked them for Sky a couple of years ago but had to crawl back as Sky were even worse. Cant go with cable as the local kids vandalise the green boxes on street corners as fast as they can be repaired.
So I gave BT an ultimatum, sort my connection out or risk losing me as a customer.
Unbelievably, an engineer arrived early for the next day appointment and spent about 4 hours correcting faults including rewiring from pole in street and replacing box on wall.
I now have a fairly solid 2.8 that peaks at 3.2 in the wee hours, and thats the best connection I've ever had !

Change ISP mate if you can.

Like yourself I live within spitting distance from my BT exchange yet I got poor ping and slow downloads.

I simply dumped BT as soon as my contract would allow.

I'm now with Virgin and very happy.

Ok, I'm posting this result at 04:45, thankfully, its little if any slower at any other time of day. :)

Edit: To be sure I was not talking crap, I've just tested it again....

Seems almost ironic to be happy with Virgin Media! :o :D

Having some intermittent problems at the moment with my ISP, they recently had a pipe drop on them which screwed up the balancing across their Gateways and has caused widespread speed drops. It also caused them to go into something called "Plan B", whatever the hell that is.

They did this with me and all the time you are not getting a reasonable speed you can claim back the line rental for that period.

My exchange is next door, literally, and i was getting 7.8 on a 8.2mb line but all of a sudden my line went down to 2mb.
When i complained about this they said there had been a problem with the exchange and it would get fixed. In the end it took three months of official complains to get my "profile" changed, basically they had restricted my speed deliberately. They would change this "profile" and it would go back up to speed for three days then they would chaged it back down again as soon as i cancelled the line fault complaint procedure they have.

In the end i got back three months worth or connection rental and an apology (after threatening them with Section 52 of the Trade Practices Act) but the basics of it is that they were deliberately and admit-inly restricting my speed to save bandwidth space.

Too many drop outs and BT will scale your line back by increasing your target SNR margin +3dB. This increase will effectively slow the speed by stabilising the line. Eventually (if you're unlucky) you can be "penalised" by up to 15dB (~ 2Mb of sync speed)

The problem comes when it is a network issue which has caused your drop outs, and they blame you.

In work we have gone from a 2Mb line, to 0.19Mb because of a problem with the green cabinet on the estate. Despite repeated attempts to get BT to reset the line we're met with "sorry.. your line has been reduced to stabilise and reduce errors"

Just switch to a LLU provider and carry on.

LLU provider? Which are they? As mentioned, Sky runs their broadband through their own kit, rather than scrimping BT bandwidth, is this what you mean?

As far as the errors go, it's all way over my head. The engineer didn't seem too fussed with it.

Used to get 1.2 MB when only 1 mile from exchange in Birmigham with BT, took them at my next property too in Brum and only got 0.8 MB.

Got cable now - never have any problems with it at all - cheap too.

LLU Broadband

Speed - Because LLU providers use their own equipment rather than re-selling BT wholesale services, they are able to use alternative technologies, such as ADSL2 to offer faster connection speeds and added features. BT is rolling out its 21 Century Network system but this will take time and currently, BT’s hardware and lines can only support a maximum of 8Mbps. Some LLU providers on the other hand, for example Be, can provide speeds of up to 24Mbps! The speed you receive will of course depend on the ISP and package that you choose, as well as a multitude of other factors including your distance from the exchange.

Sounds like Sky's deal. The openworld tech recommended Sky as flat-out the best option on the market, but Sky apparently don't have a great track record when it comes to customer service. So if it works, it'll work great - and if it doesn't, I'm screwed. Hmm.

Go with Be / O2 (LLU).

They're hands down the best for speed, and they aren't based in India.

Turns out shouting at people does help.

Almost certainly my IP profile will be dropped back down from 6.5MB, so when that inevitably happens I'll complain again in a tactfully-placed 10 days or so. Apparently getting OfCom involved requires 3 moths of complaints, so it'll set me up to bitch my way out of the contract by the end of November.

Edit: my EOS is also down to 76/8 - good news
