BT Homehub Replacement - OR can it use the connection of another router?

We have a BT Total Broadband package which includes 8Meg broadband, digital tv with recorder, and a voip based phone which is free after 6 any day in the week. Yes I know tons of people here hate BT, however as a member of the family works for BT we get this package for free, and touch wood we have never had any issues with the connection apart from the usual throttling.

I have been itching to get rid of the "Homehub" for ages, because it will randomly crash every now and then for no reason. It's just really unstable.

The thing which stopped me from doing this was that we would lose the free VOIP phone, and with parents being parents, they want to keep that because its free.

It's a long shot but is there any router or any workaround so I can still use the voip phone with a different router? Afaik the phone talks to the router itself. Or is there a way to make the homehub use the connection of another router. I'm sure I read this somewhere but I can't remember. If its possible, would the phone etc still work?

Thanks

If you connected one of the switch ports on the Home Hub to one of the switch ports on your new router and disabled DHCP on the HH, it would probably work. It depends how the VoIP bits work.

After a lot of poking about i've found some tools engineers use to flash firmware to the HH. a lot of people say the one I had (6.2.2.6E) was very buggy. I've flashed the latest version after a lot of fiddling and it's noticably more responsive on the wireless front, so hopefully it will be stable :)
