I've just been given one at work, the person has no use of it. It's brand new.

Can i use it for anything? It has a nice phone but from first glance it seems to be an internet only phone. Is that correct? If i can't use it without a subscription to BT then i guess i'll chuck it, but thought i'd check here first.

Can we use it as a normal phone?

Chuck it, even if you have a broadband subscription with BT its the worst Modem/Router in the entire world.
And the phone is a pile of poo too.
 
you have to have a bt broadband subscription to use the phone I believe, bt provide you with a telephone number that accompanies the phone (not sure if you can use it as a normal phone). Unfortuantly you cant even use it as a switch as i think it only has two ethernet ports on it (a two port switch isnt very useful lol), but you may be able to configure it as a wireless repeater (I forget the technology it has to support to achieve this, maybe someone else can help here).
 
Twopossible options; i) sell it on Ebay or ii) pass it on to someone with a similar hub who's looking for one for setting up or expand a wireless network........:p
 
Seems a bit of a waste.....shame you're a long way off or I might be tempted to wander past your bin sometime soon!!
 
got to say ive had the bt hub for 6 months now and i think it is brill, no probs d/l max speeds never crashed, i would always recomend it.

Agreed. I've had mine for 6 months and have had no issues at all. Decent bedroom TV set up with the free Vision package too.

Generally always get between 500 and 800 Kbps and the wireless connection works well with the laptop and PS3. Fine for my use.
 
my mum just had hers delivered, been stuck on 512kb for AAAGES at her house, i noticed the other week the bt site was saying 'up to 1mb' now, so i told her to phone up

it got delivered today, and it's connecting at 480Kbs (less than before!), the d-link router that was there before is now connecting at 11xx something, i'm trying a firmware update on the homehub, but doubt it will do any good, will probably be letting the homehub gather dust and using the old d-link instead (or changing it for a linksys wireless router)

moral of the story, bt homehub is utter balls*


*will confirm this if the firmware update doesn't fix the speed


lmao, i think it bricked itself, during the update it made a click noise, then started flashing red & orange, now it won't turn on :D

They take a while to get up to full speed. I'm sure it covers it in the manual of the online FAQ somewhere.

have you seen the state of them? take ages to dial (compared to every other router I've used)

The only thing I like about it is it's one of the few routers that allows you to have two xbox360's on the same router with open NAT on both at the same time.
