BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Ok follow on from post about my sons new infinity install,he`s just done a speed test and has this....

Dl -35.3
Ul -7.6
ip profile - 48.91 Mbps

Is that in the ballpark or is his dl a tad low for his profile?

I was under the impression that only New builds (plus whatever trial areas they are doing) are going to have FTTH, and that it was going to be a paid option to have it installed (costing hundreds) later on next year.

Dunno if its worth it really, I get the full 80 with no stability issues, not sure I see the benefit yet of having 160, and I download a lot!

Because you can :D

I would debate that going to 80mb from my 20mb line really makes that much difference to what I do. But I AM doing it because I'm that kind of person and want that speed.

Been over 10 days now, any tips/hints to maybe bump it a little without getting onto BT, or is that the best option? (If BT would actually do anything as it`s only lacking a little speed).

Yay got my connection fixed - sad that you have to escalate it to executive level complaints to get what is the normal level of good service from most other companies - but when you do it does get fixed quick :D

Speeds still a bit slow but I'm guessing the problems with the line have pulled the profile down a bit.

The engineer who hooked up the 2nd line (spare pair on current line) had managed to move the overhead line near the telephone pole so that it was caught in branches nearby causing tension on the connection at our end and the cable where it went into the box on the pole was being crushed by the door to the box - when he fully opened the door up it severed the cable completely :| don't think the engineer out to fix it today was too impressed by the quality of work done by the previous guy.

anyone else getting slow speeds in the london area tonight?

I'm not in the London area but seeing quite a bit of varied latency through the BT network tonight (probably congestion) and slow speeds but those I was putting down to recent issues my end but could be a general BT issue.

Found this by Googling perhaps try it who knows it might help :

Tick "Randomise port each time uTorrent starts"
Untick "Enable UTP Bandwidth control / management" (something like that)
Force outgoing encryption
Disallow incoming legacy connections
Change the maximum concurrent connections to 256 and the max per torrent to 64
Limit upstream bandwidth accordingly
Change the "net max transp disposition" to 255
Change the "Max ports halfopen" to 255

Hmmm quick question, I've got the engineer coming on Wednesday and just received this email from BT:

Note: your engineer will attach a new faceplate to your master phone socket. This means you'll only be able to use existing phone extension sockets for phone calls and not for connecting a computer. Depending on your set-up, this means you might not be able to use any existing wire-connected computer in its current location. Your engineer will be happy to talk about your options.

What does that mean exactly, any "existing wire-connected computer"? I'm guessing/hoping that doesn't apply in 99% of cases?
