BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

One question about Zen FTTC.

When you order FTTC with Zen, do they supply a vDSL modem and does a BT engineer install this?

Also I notice there home packages only have a 2MB cap?

Luckily enough I have been offered free FTTC (Business grade :p) through work, one of the perks of working for a ISP I guess. So just looking at the costs compared to Zen and BT.

About to put down my order today. There were a few other appealing ISPs like ADSL24 and other entanet providers. But I thought I might as well enjoy the BT Infinity unlimited (I've got the impression there is no strict FUP from other posts) while it lasts and there's a possibility of a move soon which ADSL24 wouldn't accomodate.

The only thing making me uneasy is this 18m contract... but pings lately on BE* haven't been great at times so hopefully this makes an improvement.

Anyone else changed over from BE*? Do I have to give them another call to let them know I've cancelled? The guy on the phone and two of the three e-mails I got have confused me on whether I do or not.

Also, is there any recommended tips/tweaks/etc on this? Been uninterested in this stuff since UKOnline had given a flawless service before they closed.

One final question, is the BT Homehub provided decent enough fore wired/wireless connections throughout the house? My recent netgear DGN2000 died just outside of warranty like my previous 3 DG models so I am hoping to avoid a netgear this time round.

BT phone up yesterday asking if i have ordered another service on the line, no idea what they were talking about. Sounded like she was unsure herself. She said that she was going to call me back today to confirm, but never did.

What are the chances that it gets installed when they said it would? Anyone else experience delays ? :|

BE are cutting my inet off on saturday and BT will only install on wednesday. Which means like four nights with no internet. What will i do :( might have to go out side.

Moved from Be there my self.

There isnt anything to fear.

The only bad thing if your a heavy torrenter is the peak time 4pm-12am capping and the all day capping on the weekends.

Only the occasional torrenting when things require it for game updates, or some other tools that use it.

Is NTTP unhindered? Or does it require SSL/VPN/Both.

Ordered today, set for activation next Thursday. We have a BT line already, so it's £24 a month and first 3 month free. Does that sound about right?

Well, I have mine all set for a few days after we move in to the new place.

Previous occupants never had a phone line, so I've go to get one put in - but it's free with the Infinity install, so I'm not complaining :)

Heavy month for me so far, replacement HDD re-installing steam games.

Expecting call from BT towards the end of the month ^^

BT Infinity installed today

Had BT Infinity installed today.

Engineer came and said he was just going to the exchange. I had already setup the HH3 and tested connection wirelessly.

Engineer came back after 25 minutes and connected up the Openreach Modem. Noted its made by Huawei in China and is called an Echolife HG612 also lists a firmware version on the back.

only thing I could fine on there website was this

Echolife HG612 downloads

Engineer said most people just have the modem on a desk or top and then have the HH3 sat on top of the modem! He said a lot of people don't really understand how it works they are just bothered about the internet working. He said he was an apprentice and after 1 month training they sent him out on his own. He said it was a new training programme for apprentices they were trialling to send them out in the wild to fend for themselves and learn from their mistakes. He had actually only been in the job 4 months.

He connected everything up and I said I will sort the wires and positioning out of the modem etc. He then tested the phone (changed to BT from O2) and the speed on speedtest.net. He said they were not supposed to do this on speedtest.net but he liked to just to see what speeds you get. He then said it may increase or decrease in a few days.

So all went well so far. Only using it wirelessly at the moment but intend to set up cat5 cable from downstairs to the room where the PC's are.

One thing I noted was the default setting for the wireless connection is for b/g/n which only gives you 130mbps connection. Changed this to N 40mhz and it set the bandwidth to 300mbps.
Also for some reason my TLink WN822N is only connecting at 54mbps and it should be connecting a lot faster than that as its wireless N

Router is a big basic interface wise but will see how it goes.

Can anybody answer my question regarding BT option 1 usage? According to our landlord we have a 40GB usage, i would like to know if there is a offpeak and on peak usage?

Is this 40GB on peak and unlimited off peak?
