BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Oh didn't know about this, source?

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.p...uk-consumer-550mbps-and-1gbps-fttp-tiers.html

I doubt I will be able to justify the price they will charge for 1Gbps when I’m currently paying £24 a month for 80/20. I would be annoyed spending more than £60 a month which it’s unlikely to be near I would expect it to be around £80-90.

Looking at the current wholesale prices 550Mbps is only £30 ish a year more than they currently charge for a 330 line so hopefully the prices for it should be similar to the current 330 packages.

I am hoping more providers start to offer FTTP packages to bring the prices down a little as they are looking fairly expensive compared to the other FTTP rollouts.

I'm getting scammed for £60 a month :/ for 330 the new packages don't show 330 so will it be a free upgrade :D

Put my order for FTTP in on Sunday night, chap is here today to do the first stage and get the fibre to the house from the street :). Wasn’t expecting that to happen until next week.

Currently scheduled for go live on the 30th :)

All the new houses across the road have FTTP, but I can't get it so I'm stuck on FTTC. At least I get 60 Mbps which is fast enough for 90% of things I use the internet for. Virgin Media won't come here until all the roads are adopted which will take another few years.

It's frustrating that they can't simply offer FTTP everywhere, there's clearly infrastructure in place for it.

I wonder if FTTPoD is available to you? Check the dsl checker at: https://www.dslchecker.bt.com

It might be worth asking for a desktop survey to be done to see how much it would cost for them to bring FTTP to your house. It is more expensive for the first 12 months, and you have to pay the build costs. But its either that or wait for them to get around to doing your house.

I've already had it done, it was about £7k!

I’ve had fttp @ 330Mbps for 18 months now and it’s been rock solid with BT costs me £60 per month. I don’t hit 330 and average around 310. Interesting this last week it won’t go about 292Mbps which is still wayyy more than I need but it does feel like they are restricting it slightly as the speed tests are almost identical time and time again

You do understand that network overheads/routing/peering is playing a part in whatever speeds you are getting though surely? Once you are pulling data from a server not on the BT network, you are at the mercy of the transit network(s).

I take it that signing up to BT through a cashback site is still the cheapest way to make use of an Openreach FTTP connection, even if it's not particularly cheap? TalkTalk/Sky have been making noises about launching FTTP but there's no sign of anything coming out of that at the moment.

Yup I signed up when there was a £120 gift card, plus 105 I think from Quidco.

Taking that off the total cost (24 month contract...) averages it down to £31 a month for the 150Mbps package.

Not horrendous!

I’m coming to the end of my current contract with plusnet in January.

My current package with them is Fibre Extra 80/20:

Unlimited Fibre Extra - £20.99
Discount - £4.00
Line Rental - £18.99
Unlimited UK & Mobile - £8.00
Caller Display - £0.00

Total = £43.98 per month

I’m looking to move to Ultrafast package as g.fast is available in my area unfortunately BT full fibre isn’t an option currently.

What are my best options?

The customer service might not be any better but they have a huge network and their wholesale business is what people like Zen use to backhaul their customers to their core. I'd trust TalkTalk not to have congestion issues ahead of the smaller niche players.

Your best bet to know when it’s coming is to keep an eye out for Openreach vans, or connectors appearing on poles if you’re fed from overhead.

Have the engineer coming tomorrow morning to finish off the fttp install, sticking the ONT in and hooking up the coil of fibre that’s currently sat outside.

Read mixed things as to what happens to the phone line, some people say it stays as a copper line, some say that it gets moved over to using the fibre.

Any ideas which it’s likely to be?

What did you order? Normally you'd be told your line is moving to a VOIP line.
